Eugene Spell Obituary

SPELL, Eugene COTTAGEVILLE - Eugene Stanley "Stan" Spell, husband of Barbara Sharpe Spell, died Monday in Columbus, Indiana from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 57. Mr. Spell was born January 24, 1950, in Columbia, a son of the late Wilburn Eugene "W.E." Spell and Grace Evelyn Dandridge Spell. Mr. Spell was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and was an examiner with the insurance industry for over 27 years throughout the southeast. He received his degree in accounting from the University of South Carolina in 1976 and served in the South Carolina National Guard. Surviving besides his wife, is: a step-daughter, Crestina Michele Gallagher and husband Robert Charles Gallagher of Orlando, FL; a sister, Marsatina Ritchie and husband Chris Ritchie of Cottageville; a nephew, George Eugene Allan Ritchie and two step-grandchildren, Elisea Anne Gallagher and Grace Carol Gallagher. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Spring Hill Baptist Church with burial in Ackerman Cemetery at Red Oak. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul St., Walterboro, SC. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060 or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 9801-I Southern Pines Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28273. Barbara--I am so sad to learn of Stan's passing. We worked together at a life ins. co. in Jacksonville. We remained good friends ever since. I will miss seeing Stan at the CDS conferences. He was a genuinely good man and a steadfast friend. I will truly miss him.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure to work with Stan while he was with the WV Insurance Dept. Stan taught me a great deal about the proper way to perform insurance company examinations and I will always be grateful to him. Over the years I would see him at various CDS meetings and it was always interesting.

I had the good fortune to meet and work with Stan in Connecticut. We spent many evenings in the hotel lounge rehashing the traumas of the day. Stan will be missed. My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Stan's family.
