Loosing a lifelong family friend, the last of the Charleston Graves Cannon Street Clan, is one of the saddest moments of my life, other than that felt when his wife, Gert proceeded him in transition. Only faith in the belief that he truly joins the ancestrial energy of his Mother and Father, sisters Annette and Pauline and brothers Michael and Bobby provides some consolation. I will miss his smile and our visits and conversations greatly, but I will remember him and Gert with the greatest love and appreciation for the love and familyship given to me and my son Amon! As I look back at my high school days there is not a day that I can remember not seeing Mr. Graves either walking the halls or sitting on the bench by the band room. He had a smile that would light up a room and a soft spoken voice. Thank you Mr. Graves for the memories and friendship. May you rest in peace and I pray for your family during this time of loss.

As I completed a weekend visit with Joe Duncan, I was shocked to receive the news of the passing of my friend, fraternity brother, mentor, and former co-worker.
In 1968, I became a member of the coaching staff at BWHS headed by Jimmy Fields, Joe Duncan and Gene Graves as athletic director. We became known as the KAPPAS in the gym, since we were all members of this great fraternity.
I will always be grateful for the mentoring and guidance afforded me by one who touched the lives of so many.
May God's love make your grief bearable.

My Eugene Graves was my homeroom teacher and PE teacher back in 1956 at Bonds-Wilson HS. He was the first graduate of Hampton Institute I knew. He emphasized being n shape mentally and physically. He taught us how to square dance and appreciate its many moves. He was a great individual, coach, and motivator. He was at our class of 1959 50th reunion and we talked about my living now in the area where he went to college (Hampton Roads). We miss him already and will definitely miss him at our next class reunion. Thank you, Mr. Graves, for being such a positive role model. CWO3 Carol Louis Lawrence (USN Retired)

It is with deep sorrow that Sandy and I voice our grief. Mr. Graves (Gene) as we so affectionately called him was a friend, a mentor and a partner in tennis. We want the children to know that you had a magnificent father. He had goodness covered on all sides and I remember that he was a man who shared with others his earthly goods and his wisdom. He will be greatly, greatly missed, but his smile and kindness will stay with us forever. We met him in 1979 upon our move to Charleston, and we have been friends since that time. May he rest in peace and his family should marvel in his goodness.
