Ethel Brewer Obituary

Ethel S. Brewer GOOSE CREEK - In the early afternoon of April 2, 2023, our mom, Ethel Elizabeth Son Brewer, went home to be with her Jesus. Born on October 23, 1938, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the James Simeon Son and Dovie Ethel Steadman. A graduate of the 1958 Class at St. Andrews High School, she excelled in Basketball and Softball as well as receiving numerous awards for typing and shorthand. She had the honor of being the first person to use the emergency telephone at Folly Beach. She married James W. Brewer, Sr. in 1958. They had four children. She was a fulltime homemaker and loved her church, family, and friends. She immensely enjoyed going to her grandchildren's ball games, recitals, and any other programs they were involved in. She and James would travel to out-of-town ballgames, and they were the unofficial Grandma and Grandpa of some of the teams. She loved people and was best known however for being a prayer warrior. She enjoyed sending cards out to family and friends to encourage them. She was a Girl Scout Leader and a softball coach for Goose Creek Parks and Recreation. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Goose Creek, where she held many positions in the church which included the GA Director, benevolence committee, stewardship committee, CWT trainer, VBS director and her all-time favorite-Sunday School Teacher. She taught Sunday School for more than forty years. She was a member of First Baptist Church for over 56 years (1961). She visited the nursing homes and hospitals. She always gave to her church as well as, Operation Christmas Child and Prisoner Packets. Her love of sports was known to all and she was a diehard Atlanta Braves and Clemson Tiger fan. During a ballgame she could be found eating boiled peanuts and taking her "staycation" watching them. In addition to her church, she supported to the St. Judes' Children Hospital, DAV, USO, and Wounded Warrior Projects. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; James W. Brewer, Sr.; and son; James W. Brewer, Jr.; sister, Ruth Wilson; brothers, Rastus Son, Sidney Eugene Son. Surviving are her four daughters, Wanda (Ken) Housand of Summerville, Cindy Brewer of Goose Creek, and Marie Brewer of Duncan, South Carolina, Wendy (Scott) Hawkins of Moncks Corner. In addition, she has two grandchildren, Amanda (Mark) Jackson of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Taylor (Lauren) Brewer of Ladson; great-grandson, Sam Jackson; sister, Wanda Frances Pruitt; sisters-in-love, Katie (John) Thomas of Rentz, GA, Jennie Son of Piedmont, special niece, Gale Brewer of Rockledge, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
