Essie Lewis Obituary

Essie L. Lewis N. CHARLESTON - Essie L. Lewis, 93, of North Charleston, SC, died Friday, June 14, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in the J. HENRY STUHR., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street at 2:00 pm. Her eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 16, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and Monday, June17, 2013 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel. Essie Lee Lewis was born December 6, 1919 in Walterboro, SC, she was the daughter of the late Essie E Herndon and the late Anna R Dewitt Herndon. Early in her life she worked as a waitress at the Walterboro Hotel. She moved to Charleston in the 1930's and worked at a local hotel. Later she worked at her daughter's dance school, Darlene's School of Dance of Goose Creek. She was a member of Holmes Avenue Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Jewell Lewis of North Charleston, SC; daughters: Lillie Benton and her husband Derryl of Hanahan SC, June L. Jones and her husband David of Goose Creek, SC and Darlene L. Schrader and her husband Stan of Goose Creek, SC; eight grandsons, three granddaughters, eight great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons; nieces and nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband Junior E. Lewis, daughter Laraine Roe, great-granddaughter Paris Linville and sister Virgie Sewell. We thank Miss Julia Ferguson from the bottom of our hearts for her care and love for our Mother. Memorials may be made to Charleston Area Meals On Wheels, 259 Meeting St., Charleston SC 29401.
