Essie Barton Obituary

Essie "Toots" Pollock Barton, 96, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, April 11, 2026. Born on February 1, 1930, in Denmark, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Eks Wye Pollock, Sr. and Essie Gray Pollock.

Essie was raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina, before moving to Summerville, SC. She was the devoted wife of the late Whitt E. Barton, Jr., with whom she shared 70 years of marriage! Essie worked for Merrill Lynch and also for the telephone company Southern Bell. She loved planting flowers and working in her garden and was the president of the Flowertown Garden Club for many years. Caring for her family was her greatest joy and she loved bringing them together. Yearly trips to their cabin in Pickens, SC will forever be a cherished memory. She dearly loved ice cream, of any flavor, and Jamocha Shakes.

She is survived by her children: Kenneth Whitt Barton and Karen Barton Perea (Maurice), her grandchildren: Kenneth Ryan Barton, Stefan Alexander Perea, and Samantha Perea Broadwater (Ethan), her great-grandchild, Barret Alexander Perea; as well as her sister, Patsy Stone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Whitt E. Barton and her parents.

A visitation of family and friends will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 2pm until 4pm at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, 303 S. Main Street., Summerville, SC 29483. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, beginning at 12:00pm at Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
