Erin Burton Obituary

Erin Burton CHARLESTON - Erin Ashley Hughes Burton, 42 died January 18, 2023, after a courageous 2-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Erin attended Sullivan's Island Elementary, Porter Gaud School, and Duke University, where she earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering and Architectural Design. She later earned her PE. As an athlete, Erin set school and state records in cross country at Porter Gaud; competed at a national level as a rower at Duke; became a world class rower and a member of the US Rowing team. She won the national title as a lightweight rower in 2006. In 2008, she narrowly missed the Olympic team. After retiring from rowing, she began cycling competitively, winning state titles in NC, SC and GA as well as a first place (women's) finish in the Assault on Mt Mitchell. She competed briefly on a professional level. Erin began her career with BP Cooper River in 2012 as a project engineer, later serving as Operations Superintendent and Optimization Engineer. Prior to her illness, she served as Production Specialist for BP Whiting, near Chicago. Erin will forever be remembered for her intellect, her beauty, her work ethic, and the determined spirit that allowed her to excel in all that she did. She is grateful to her many friends in the running, rowing, cycling and BP communities for their continued support through her illness as well as the many medical professionals that oversaw her care. Erin is survived by her parents; her brother, John Michael (Jensie); nephew, Jack; and a loving extended family. A service of inurnment will be conducted at Mepkin Abbey Columbarium in Monck's Corner on Friday, January 27, 2023, at 11 am. Afterwards, the family will receive friends and celebrate Erin's life at their home, 1458 Gunnison St., Mount Pleasant. I was Erin's sophomore roommate at Duke and want to express my sincere condolences to her family. She was a force and could truly accomplish whatever she set her mind to. Erin was also funny, brilliant, and kind. It always baffled me that she would voluntarily get up well before dawn to go out on the cold water but her drive was incredible! I'm so very sorry for your tremendous loss.

I had the pleasure of working with Erin in Whiting. Her bravery in uprooting to move halfway across the country in pursuit of a new challenge during the height of COVID isolation was outshone only by the courage displayed throughout her battle. She had a positive impact on everyone around her. Her drive and positive outlook were infectious, and I´m thankful for the brief time we all got to know her. My sincere condolences to her family and everyone that called her friend.

I only knew Erin for a few brief weeks at 12 PS / VRU 300 in Whiting. In that short period of time she became a good friend and had the ability to make everyone around her to like her. Her warm presence made her an easy mold into the team.

RIP - Erin my good friend. We will truly miss you !

It was my pleasure, not only to teach Erin, but also to take her to school over the course of several years along with my sons and Willy Hutcheson. We became a family of sorts as we encountered several recurring characters on our route, including a cyclist we called "Blinky Butt."

Erin was such an intelligent, hardworking, upbeat student and put her all into everything she did. In short, she was a wonderful human being.

My deepest condolences.

I rowed with Erin in college. She was a tremendous athlete and a force to be reckoned with! She maintained a prominent role on our team despite being injured much of the time, and coached our walk-ons to great success. In every way, Erin showed her exceptional commitment to the sport and to the success of her teammates. What an inspiration. I am so sorry to learn that she is gone.

Both a friend and a former co-worker, she was a great lady. Smart, funny, hard worker. She was very accomplished in her young life, but still so young for God to call her home.

I am a friend of Kacie´s in Spartanburg and have been praying for God´s supernatural peace and presence for you all through this long hard journey. We lost our 45 year old son with a brain tumor 3 years ago this January. My heart hurts with you all as a family as I continue to pray for peace and rest because there is no understanding this side of Heaven. There remains the "deep missing" but I have also experienced the deep love and peace of God that brings an abiding joy in life, in the midst of the sorrow, that comes from trusting our God who loves us even when we don´t always feel it. There is so much more eternally than we can even imagine or perceive than the brokenness of this world. May you be comforted and lifted up by His great healing Presence continually. With much love and shared sorrow with you, Cissy

Our prayers and sympathy are with you and your family. I had the pleasure of working with Erin and being a mentor in BP. We shared many stories of our experiences and aspirations. Family was always at the heart of the discussion. She will continue as a role model for many people.

I was so sorry to see the obituary in today's paper, as I was not aware of Erin's recent health battles. My sincerest condolences go to out to Erin's family, colleagues and friends. I have nothing but the fondest memories of Erin (as well as of John Michael and Jensie) as one of my favorite, most diligent and gifted math students. My most recent contact with Erin was online as I was tasked with selling a rowing skull that was donated to a local charity. Without first realizing who I was, in typical Erin fashion she reached out to me and offered an abundance of valuable information and expert advice. Her extensive resume' of accomplishments in both her professional and personal life is quite impressive, and she will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Erin.
