Emily Lee Obituary

Emily Lewis Lee COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Emily Lewis Lee, 92, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21, 2014, at Greenlawn Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park with military rites. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2 until 3 p.m. at the church and again following the service at the home of Gary and Ginger Lee. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Lee died Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Born in Brunswick County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Norborne W. and Carrie Matthews Lewis. She moved to Petersburg, Va., where she graduated from Petersburg High School in 1939 as Valedictorian and Madison College, now JMU, with honors and received a Bachelor of Science Degree, followed by a Dietetic Internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Lee joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a dietitian, serving at Station Hospital, Camp Rucker, Ala., and Regional Hospital, Fort Bragg, N.C., where she met and married Lt. Luther M. Lee on March 30, 1946. The Army transferred the Lees to Fort Jackson, S.C., where civilian Emily V. Lee obtained a position in the Dietetic Service of Dorn VA Hospital. She was Assistant Chief of Dietetic Services from 1950 to 1956 and received a Meritorious Service Award. A registered dietitian and a contributing member of the American Association from 1944 -1997, she served in various capacities, including two terms as State President of South Carolina Dietetic Association and Chairperson in 1954 of the original Scholarship Committee, and most recently as the association's representative to the State Council on Aging. With the birth of her sons, Mrs. Lee resigned her VA Hospital position and participated in church, community, and Tri Sigma Sorority volunteer positions. At Greenlawn Baptist Church, she has served as Youth Sunday School leader; organized the Wednesday Night Fellowship Supper Volunteer Program; Deacon; and writes a monthly "people column" for the church newsletter. Crayton and A.C. Flora Booster Club work was followed by committee assignment by Mayor Kirkman Finlay for the establishment of the SC State Museum, where she was among the original Docent group. Mrs. Lee was a charter member of the Richland County Legal Auxiliary organized in 1972, serving in various capacities. From 1947 to 1972 and later 1986 to 1995, Mrs. Lee served Tri Sigma Sorority as Social Service Chair; Collegiate and Alumnae VP; Walton House Board, National Headquarters; and received the Sorority's prestigious Founders Award at the 1995 National Convention. She assisted in the organization and held leadership positions in the Columbia S.C. Area Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma. In 1980, Emily Lewis Lee was the first out-of-state resident to be invited by the Virginia Governor to serve on the James Madison Board of visitors, after having served two terms on the college's Alumni Board. She received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1981. She served as Chairperson of the 1943 Class Scholarship Fund. In 1972, Mrs. Lee began a new career as a Legal Assistant in the law office of her late husband, Luther M. Lee, until her retirement in 1991. During this period, the law office moved to the Congaree Vista to the Luther M. Lee Building with establishment of the Conference/Social Room known as The Gamecock Room, where the Lees' collection of Gamecock memorabilia, begun in 1963 on their overseas trip, found a "home." The Lees' loyalty to the University of South Carolina has been evident through the years and recently the Endowed Luther M. Lee Scholarship has been established at the USC School of Law. Surviving are her sons, James Lewis Lee (Cynthia) of Mt. Pleasant, Gary Wilson Lee (Virginia) of Columbia; grandchildren, Jonathan James Lee, Virginia Macy Lee, Matthew William Lewis Lee, Katherine Grace Lee, and Christina Elaine Lee. She was predeceased by her husband, Luther M. Lee. Memorials may be made to James Madison University Foundation, 1 Court Street, Harrisonburg, VA, 22801; Greenlawn Baptist Church, 6612 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC, 29209; Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation, 225 N. Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

Emily Lee was a wonderful neighbor. She was so kind and loving and one of he best neighbors that we ever had. We will always remember her. Our deepest sympathy to Lewis & Gary. Barbara & Jim Lattimore

I first met Aunt Emily when I was 7 years old. My Uncle Luther Lee brought her for a family visit when she was his new bride and even at my very young age I realized she was a special person who had entered my world. My relationship with her as niece and friend lasted until her death.

Aunt Emily was a communicator in so many ways. During the years she and I corresponded by letter - a lost art now that computers have changed the ways we share news. A birthday never passed without hearing from her with a birthday card, and, yes a stick of Big Red gum enclosed.

Aunt Emily was generous, kind, and genuinely interested in her family and friends. I will always cherish the memories of our friendship.

To Lewis and Gary and your families, I offer condolences and mourn the loss of your wonderful mom and grandmother.

I first knew Miss Emily as my Sunday School teacher. I will never forget her many expressions of love: chaperoning our youth beach trips, sharing the "Gamecock Room" for special occasions, mailing me the church bulletin when I moved to Georgia, and sending the annual birthday cards and gum. Gary and Lewis, I loved your mother. I pray that God will give comfort to you and your families during your time of sorrow.

What an amazing lady and friend. Emily made us feel like family since 1970 at USC. She , Nancy and Greer shared Sigma bonds . We enjoyed our last visit with her to watch the 2013 Gamecocks beat Arkansas. Heaven is truly richer and we can all expect a piece of Big Red gum when we get there. Our prayers to Lewis and Gary.

I know that Emily Lee did not intend to make Wrigley's richer, but she sent gum so often with cards of encouragement -- even when we were in Africa and China, so the post office would have gone broke long before, if not for her faithful thoughtfulness and encouragement. Hard to find a more thoughtful and generous person in the whole wide world.
Thanks Emily, and we will always love you, and be fortunate to have had you in our lives!

We love you all so much! .....we can not wait to look up into the star filled skies at Edisto and know Grandma Lee is smiling down!

Another wonderful attribute to Emily Lee's life was the founding of the Spouse House apartments to house spouses of veterans who are in the VA Hospital across the road from Greenlawn Baptist Church. Through this ministry, inspired by dear Emily, out of town spouses have been able to stay in clean, safe, attractive apartments at a very nominal cost. Emily cared about everyone and stressed that we should all love one another and serve our wonderful God. Emily was a dear friend and Christian sister. I know where she is now and am sure she is enjoying her new heavenly home.

Emily and family,

Pete and I are so glad we visited one afternoon with you in August this past summer. We were also planning a long chat during the Christmas holidays...you have been like a second mother to me. Our children, Ben and Beth, hold you in high esteem and share a great love with those Gamecocks, too! So many treasured memories, which we have talked about a lot...thank you for beach memories, church memories, and loving each of us so much. I hold you in my heart forever...Anne Reed

My honorary "Aunt" Emily was a wonderful friend to my parents and always treated me and my brothers as if we were family. I will miss her birthday cards that never failed to contain a stick of gum. Smart, funny and an amazing organizer, Aunt Emily was a great lady in the best Southern tradition. - Jean Caughman Smolen

Emily Lee was one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I have ever known. She always remembered my children when they were young with cards and Christmas wishes, no matter how far from SC the Air Force sent my family. She was also a dear friend of my parents in fellowship at Greenlawn Baptist Church for many years; an icon of selflessness to everyone there and to everyone wherever she went. I'll never forget her.

Miss Emily will truly be missed by her mission group named in her honor
as the Emily Lee Mission Group. This group has been meeting at her house since her declining health. We even enjoyed a visit with her for our meeting
in early December. Her mission group sponsors the "Spouse House"
for spouses of the veterans staying at the Dorn VA Hospital. The spouse house was one of her ideas as she saw spouses and family members sleeping in chairs and floors at the hospital while she was working at the
VA hospital. What a blessing for this idea has been to so many folks who have stayed at the "Spouse House". She certainly will be missed by all
at Greenlawn and especially this mission group, however her memories will live on as we continue to work with the Dorn VA Hospital to keep her mission
alive. Thoughts and prayers are with the family. Sharon Davis for the Emily Lee Mission Group, Greenlawn Baptist Church

Emily was one of James Madison University's favorite daughters, and we are truly in mourning. She was engaged with JMU for 75 years, having started here as a freshman in 1939 from Petersburg VA and even attending the University's 100th year Centennial Celebration in 2008--an amazing run. She was a personal friend of mine, always sent me newspaper clippings, and someone who loved JMU. We will all miss her.
