Elvira Hill Obituary

Elvira Hill Isle of Palms - Elvira Hill, 88, of Isle of Palms, SC died Tuesday, May 15, 2018. She was born on August 15, 1929 in Mexico City, Mexico; to Manuel and Maria (Pacheco) Camin. It was there that she met her husband, Robert Hill, who was a pilot for American Airlines and Controller. They enjoyed traveling extensively, especially to South America and Puerto Rico, where they lived for a time. In 1986, they settled on the Isle of Palms, where they built their home together. Unfortunately they did not get to enjoy it together for long, as Bob passed away February 24, 1987. For years, Elvira was well-known in the community as one who cared for many children of friends and neighbors. You would see her walking or pushing strollers, covering many miles as she circled neighborhoods. To many, she became like a second mother. She loved to cook and bake and especially garden; where she would spend many an hour planting, feeding, watering, and pruning. Maybe it was due to being a licensed Cosmetologist, that she not only took pride in her looks, but also had a love of vibrant colors (like the rainbow) which were reflected in her dress and mixture of clothing - pink being her favorite. She loved pets, having several dogs over the years, but her most beloved was her parrot, Pepe, of 38 years, who is missing her terribly; along with all who mourn her loss. Of all her loves, her faith was paramount. As a member of Stella Maris Church, she tried to attend daily Mass and all other services, as she had to rely on others to take her to them. She was a member of the Women's Prayer Group and other organizations. She was always volunteering to assist wherever she felt she could be of service; primarily in the Community Hall Kitchen. Even as her physical health began to fail, she would never miss an opportunity to go to church, as she found much peace and comfort in her faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and four siblings. She is survived by two sisters-in-law who reside in New Jersey and several nieces and nephews in Mexico, but her favorite was Susana Diaz Camin, who made the trip to attend the Memorial Services, and also, her very dear friend, Father Elbano Munoz, whose current assignment is Parochial Vicar of St. Peter The Apostle Catholic Church, Naples, FL and who will be co-celebrating the Mass. Family and close friends will receive guests May 21, 2018 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC, 29464. The Rosary will begin at 5:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held May 22, 2018 at 11:00 AM at 1204 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, SC, 29482. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, Mt. Pleasant, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Stella Maris St. Vincent de Paul Society. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted to www.mcalister-smith.com.
