Elric Pinckney Obituary

PINCKNEY, JR., Elric Elric Simons Pinckney was born October 10, 1918, the son of Elric Simons Pinckney and Susan Robinson Allan Pinckney. He grew up in Charleston, was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, attended local schools and finally entered the Citadel, where he was a founding member of the Citadel Yacht Club. In 1940 he left the Citadel to join the war effort and while stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, married Margaret Ann Mosher, a stewardess for American Airlines. He served with the US Army in Germany as an artillery officer, achieving the rank of major. He returned to Charleston in 1945 and opened an independent insurance agency at 17 ¼ Chalmers Street. In 1954 The Travelers asked him to represent them as the life insurance agent for the then new Savannah River Plant, so the family did what no one ever thought they would do. They left Charleston and lived in Aiken for 40 years until he retired and returned to the Lowcountry, moving to the Presbyterian Home in Summerville. In Aiken Mr. Pinckney was active in the First Presbyterian Church and in many civic and charitable organizations, serving as president of the Aiken Chapter of the American Red Cross as well as the United Way. Additionally, he was president of the Aiken Association of Life Underwriters and the South Carolina State Association of Life Underwriters. He was a member of the South Carolina Society, St. Andrew's Society, Society of The Cincinnati and The Citadel Alumni Association. Mr. Pinckney is survived by his daughter, Margaret Pinckney Hay and her husband, Solomon Legare Hay, III; three grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Frushone, the Reverend Anna Pinckney Straight, and Adam Everette Crotts; one step-grandson: Solomon Legare Hay, IV; three great grandchildren: Sarah Allan Straight, Samuel Christopher Frushone, and James Everette Frushone. He is predeceased by his wife and son, Elric S. Pinckney, III. He was considered to be the quintessential southern gentleman and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his graveside inurnment at 2:30 Wednesday, October 4, 2006, in Magnolia Cemetery and immediately following, at 3:30, for A Celebration of Life at The Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street. Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Home of SC, Corporate Office, PO Box 210037, Columbia, SC 29221-0037 or The Second Presbyterian Church, Allan Fund, 342 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403.
