Elma Backus Obituary

BACKUS, Elma Entered into eternal rest, at her residence in Charleston, South Carolina, the afternoon of Monday, February 27, 2006, Elma Anderson Backus, widow of Delvin S. Backus. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Service at Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, Thursday, March 2, 2006 at eleven o'clock. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road, this Wednesday evening from five until eight-thirty o'clock. Mrs. Backus was born July 23, 1924 in Coward, South Carolina, the daughter of the late James C. Anderson and Mamie Coward Anderson. She was a member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church for over fifty years. She was a member of the Boone Bowen Bible Class, The United Methodist Women, The Francis Major Circle and The Josephine Abrams Circle. Mrs. Backus retired July, 1984 from the Comptroller Office at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, with thirty-nine years and eight months of service. She was a former volunteer with Roper North Hospital and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Mrs. Backus is survived by a daughter: Marcia B. Thomas and son-in-law, John B. Thomas of Columbia, SC; a son: David B. Backus of Charleston; a grandson: Cadet Andrew S. Thomas of The Citadel; two brothers: Allen Anderson of Charleston and Samuel N. Anderson of Williston, SC. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mrs. Vennie A. Thebodeau and Mrs. Ruby Cole and a brother, J. Ralph Anderson. Memorials may be made to Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, PO Box 70396, Charleston, SC 29415-0396 or to Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Avenue, N. Charleston, SC 29405. David and family, my deepest condolences go out to you. I never had the pleasure of meeting her but we spoke on the phone a few times. My mother was a tenant of hers for over 20 years( Betty F.) May God be with you during your time of need.
