Ellen Beard Obituary

BEARD, Ellen CAMDEN, SC - Graveside services for Ellen Cantey Alexander Beard, 86, of Camden, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2005 at Quaker Cemetery, Camden, SC. Reverend Harry E. Lawhon, Jr., Rector Emeritus of Grace Church, Camden, will officiate. Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge. Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 1315 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020 or Friends of the Camden Archives and Museum, 1314 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020. Mrs. Beard died Saturday, June 11, 2005, after an illness of four years. Born in 1918 at Pine Grove Plantation in Boykin, SC; she was a daughter of the late Ellen Cantey Boykin and Thomas Loyrea Alexander. Mrs. Beard grew up in Atlanta, GA. She graduated from the former Girls High School. Mrs. Beard, as a teenager, was very active in the youth group in her church. She married Henry Edward Beard, Jr. of Camden in 1941. She has been a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Surviving are her husband; her sons, Henry E. Beard, III of Camden, T. Alexander Beard of Charleston and her daughter, Ellen B. Stephenson (Mrs. John McK.) of Camden. Also survived are four grandchildren, Mary Abbot (Abby) Beard, John McK. (Jay) Stevenson, Jr., Henry A. Stephenson, Thomas B. Beard and two step-grandchildren, Christian D. Graf and Erin Graf Brauer; her sister, Meta Alexander Beard and brother, Colonel (Ret.) Thomas L. Alexander, Jr.; her brothers, I.
