Elizabeth Snyder Obituary

Elizabeth A. Snyder

AGE: 97 • Wilmington

Elizabeth A. (Duffy), Snyder age 97 of Wilmington, DE, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, surrounded by her family.

Liz was born in North Tarrytown, NY on February 3, 1917, the daughter of the late Kieran and Margaret (Callaghan) Duffy.

She graduated from the West Chester Hospital School of Nursing and went on to serve in the US Army Nurse Corps from 1942 - 1944. It was through her military service that she met and married John A. Snyder on June 16, 1943.

Liz was a founding member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish and the St. Vincent DePaul Society at her church. She served as secretary on the Brack-Ex Roselle Civic Association and volunteered at St. Francis Hospital and Brandywine Nursing Home.

She enjoyed swimming, playing cards and bingo and cherished being with her family - traveling with her husband to Ireland, Egypt, Hawaii and Rome and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Liz was preceded in death by her husband, John; her sister Mary Russo, her brother Kieran Duffy, Jr., and her grandchildren, Christine McAuliffe and Eli Singer.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: John (Christine), Thomas (Sudene), Joseph (Lisa), Mary Lou Howell (Bill), Betty Olmstead (Van), Susan Rice, Kathleen McAuliffe (Tom), Patricia Tear (Art), Margaret Agnes DuValeus (Gene) and Jane Singer (David); 30 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; her sister, Anna Duffy; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and Friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, from 6:00-8:00pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 2503 Centerville Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Committal services will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Catherine of Siena Parish at the address listed above, or to Compassionate Care Hospice, 405 E. Marsh Lane, Newport, DE 19804.

Liz's family would like to thank the nurses and aides who attended to Liz in her final journey home.

Will always remember the 1988 Diocesan Choir trip to Milan, Rome, Saltzburg, etc. Your parents shared a train berth with me. Delightful people.

Mom Snyder is a wonderful woman. She lived a good life and found joy in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. I had the privilege of caring for Mom when her primary caretaker, daughter Sue, went on vacation.
I love Elizabeth's Irish spirit. I am happy to be married to Tom and be a part of the Snyder Family.
