Eliza Gantt Obituary

GANTT, Eliza Eliza Buist Rivers Gantt of Charleston died November 19, 2008, at Roper Hospital. She was the adored wife of John Mackall Gantt, Sr. Born July 1, 1947, Lisa was the daughter of the late Dr. Arthur Lee Rivers and Louisa Taber Rivers Hagood. She spent her whole life in Charleston, preferring not to venture past Burbage's Grocery unless absolutely necessary. Lisa attended Ashley Hall School and St. Genevieve's In the Pines. She was a devoted mother of two children, extremely loving and caring of both. Lisa made her debut at the St. Cecilia Society, and remained a loyal member of The Carolina Assembly. She never missed a Sunday at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, unless it was summer. She spent every summer of her life at the family house in Saluda, NC. She will be sorely missed in both communities as a jovial, generous hostess, in the classic Charleston sense of the word. (Once, when told that Emily Post did not recommend doing something a particular way, she quickly replied, drink in hand, that it does not matter how Ms. Post chooses to do things, she never lived South of Broad. ). On a more serious note, Lisa will also be remembered by many as one of the most kind, loving, persons one could possibly meet. She did more behind the scenes for her friends and family than can possibly be imagined. She is survived by her husband, John; her daughter, Augusta Shea Porcher Kuhn, son-in-law, Senator John R. Kuhn of Charleston; her son, Charles Rucker Hipp, III, of Charleston; three beloved grandchildren (of Shea), Madeline, Philip and Louisa; her sister, Louisa Rivers Robb, brother-in-law, General Nathanial H. Robb, Jr., of Sullivan's Island, and two nieces and a nephew. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 142 Church Street, Charleston, SC, 29401, or to Pethelpers, 1447 Folly Road, Charleston, South Carolina 29412, or to The American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, North Charleston, SC 29406. Family will be receiving friends at home on Murray Boulevard Thursday afternoon. Funeral service is at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 12:00 noon on Friday, November 21, 2008. Internment, churchyard. A reception will be immediately following at the family home. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

Dear John, Reading the obituary about Liza made us rejoice that we have known such a loving, kind and delightful person. The Coon Dog Day float gathering is such a fond memory of how one can have an excuse to have a party and relax. The float always works out. We love you, John. Much love and prayers, Maria and Pat (Spartanburg/Saluda)
