Elinor Smith Obituary

Elinor Lowry Jones Smith Charleston - Elinor Lowry Jones Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend left this earthly life on December 22, 2017. Her Funeral Service will be held Thursday, December 28, 2017, in Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL. She was married to her one love for 75 years. She is the widow of Gaines W. Smith who predeceased her by only two months. She generously extended her gifts of care and compassion to family members and friends throughout her life. Church - especially Bethel United Methodist - was always an important part of her world. As an infant, her name was on the church cradle roll and as she grew, her involvement in the life of Bethel continued. Elinor treasured her long participation in The Col. Lewis Sunday School class, The Monday Morning Circle, and the Lambuth-McEldowney Circle. She also served faithfully on the Chancel Guild for many years including several terms as President. Elinor enjoyed traveling with family and friends both in the United States and abroad. However, she always stated that America had so many interesting and beautiful sights that she was happiest exploring the states. She also found joy spending time on and near the lake as well as joining family and friends in games of bridge and other card games. An avid reader, she shared her joy in books with each generation. "Gram" rejoiced in every family addition- whether through marriage or by birth. She patiently guided and encouraged each of us. Elinor and Gaines had two daughters, Kathleen Elinor Smith Moore (Herbert L.) and Sharon Kay Smith McDonald (C. Harold, deceased) who have been greatly blessed through their parents' care and guidance. Elinor's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always a source of joy to her and time spent with Gram was a special gift to every one. A new family member was always lovingly welcomed and their cherished pictures covered her refrigerator. These much loved family members include: Kenneth Gaines McDonald (Julie) and Justin; Jeffrey Capers Moore (Inna) and Silas and Addie; Heidi McDonald Blanton (Jonathan) and Rhett and Cody; Rev. Christopher Gregory Moore (Molly) and Isaac, Elijah and James. The family requests that memorials be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt St., Charleston, SC 29401 or Crescent Hospice, 501A Deanna Lane, Wando, SC 29492. While we will miss her greatly, we rejoice that Elinor rests safely in God's hands and that her example is ever with us.
