Eleanor Mayfield Obituary

Eleanor Ruth Patton Mayfield MT. PLEASANT - Eleanor Ruth Patton Mayfield, 87, of Mount Pleasant, SC, wife of William Alexander Mayfield, entered into eternal rest Sunday morning, November 20, 2016. Her family will hold a private Funeral Service. Eleanor was born in Kershaw, SC, May 16, 1929, daughter of Melvin Glenn Patton and Ruth Shirley Patton. She grew up in St. George, SC, one of the three Patton girls, and graduated from Furman University, where she met her husband, Bill Mayfield. She taught elementary school in Sumter, SC and El Paso TX, where she married Bill who was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX, eventually settling down to raise their family in Hobcaw Point in Mount Pleasant, SC. Eleanor was known for her beauty and grace. She was a member of Hibben United Methodist Church, the PEO service organization, Furman Alumni Association, various circle groups at the church, and a bridge club in Mount Pleasant that met once a month for more than 50 years. She loved dancing, living on the Wando River, the town of Mount Pleasant, and her family. In the 1970's, Eleanor became an environmental activist in the "Save the Wando" movement, much to the surprise of her family. Eleanor and Bill opened the Wells Gallery in 1993, and worked together throughout the 1990's to make it one of the premier art galleries in Charleston. Eleanor is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Bill; her daughter, Susan Mayfield Hunnicutt and her husband Lee of Salida, CO; grandchildren, Joseph Raleigh West III (Hall), of North Charleston, SC, Scott Patton West, of Columbia, SC, Dr. Caroline West Laggis (David), of Salt Lake City, Utah, and William Alexander Mayfield, of Gainesville, FL; her sister, Dorothy Jean Patton Denaro (Lou), of Moncks Corner, SC; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sons, William Glenn Mayfield, and Wells Thomas Mayfield, and she was looking forward to be joined with them in a joyous reunion. The family would like to thank Hospice and the staff at Sandpiper Center for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lord Berkeley Land Trust, 223 East Main Street, Suite B, Moncks Corner, SC 29461, or to Veterans Expeditions, PO Box 476, Salida, CO 81201, or to the charity of one's choice.
