Elbert Smith Obituary

Elbert Darnell Smith "Buddy" CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest on the morning of March 14, 2010, Elbert Darnell "Buddy" Smith, husband of Elizabeth C. Smith. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert D. Smith are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in Fort Johnson Baptist Church Thursday, March 18, 2010, at eleven o'clock. Interment, Private. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service at the church. Buddy was born December 2, 1926 in Tifton, GA, the son of Elbert Smith and Daisy Darnell Smith Vinson. He was a decorated Veteran of WW 11 and retired after 30 years as an engineman in the U.S. Navy. After retiring from the Navy he worked for AVCO building Helicopter turbines for the Vietnam war effort. After leaving AVCO he worked at the Naval weapons station and retired after 10 years of service as a mechanic on missile transport vehicles and fire fighting equipment. Anything that had screws, nuts or bolts, he could fix. He was an active member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church and often gave to the homeless and needy. He was very family-oriented and loved nothing more than to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 63 years; two sons, Eddie Smith and wife, Carol, Billy Smith and wife, Terri, of James Island; three daughters, Karin S. McAdory and husband, Walter, of James Island, Anne Schiffiano and husband, Tony, of Alexandria, VA and Patti Wolfe and husband, Stephen Slaughter, of James Island; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Charlie and Billy Smith. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, SC Chapter, 2090 Executive Hall Road, Suite 130, Charleston, SC 29407. I was so sadden to hear of your Dad's passing, and to Mrs. Smith, your life partner of 63 years. He was such an important part of Emily & Jennifer's childhood. The girls and I share many fond memories of the time we spent with him and the Smith family. You all will remain close to my heart, always.
