Elbert Moore Obituary

Elbert Moore Jr. BARNWELL, SC - Elbert Timothy Moore, Jr. died on February 20, 2024. He was born on November 18, 1946, in Augusta, Georgia. He was the son of Elbert Timothy Moore and Ann Foy Moore. His grandparents were Rufus Richmond Moore, Alda Sauls Moore, John Watkins Foy, and Mary Schumpert Foy. He graduated from Barnwell High School, attended Wofford College, and received his B.A., M.A.T., and J.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina. He served in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade of the U. S. Army in Vietnam from 1968-69. He coached football at Lower Richland High School, Barnwell High School, Socastee High School, Blackville-Hilda High School, and Furman University. His teams at Blackville-Hilda High compiled a record of 81-10-1 in his seven seasons there, winning state championships in 1983 and 1984. He also coached baseball at Lower Richland, Socastee, and Blackville-Hilda. He coached in the North-South All Star Football game in 1983 and the Shrine Bowl in 1984. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as Principal of Blackville Elementary School. He retired from coaching in 1986 and entered law school at the University of South Carolina. After clerking for a circuit judge, he established the Moore Law Firm in Barnwell where he practiced until his death. He was also in partnership with his father in Moore and Moore Cows, a cattle operation in Snelling. He was a member of Barnwell United Methodist Church, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 828, Barnwell Rotary Club, Ellenton Agricultural Club, the S.C. Association for Justice, the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Democratic Party, and a life member of the S.C. PTSA. He was a former chairman of the State Board of Education and a former chairman of the Barnwell County Council. He is survived by his wife, Frances Scott Turner Moore; sons, Richmond Turner Moore and wife, Parker, and Edward Foy Moore; grandchildren, Eliza Brent Turner Moore, Richmond Thomas Moore, William Turner Moore, and Graydon Foy Moore; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Hawks Hit Harder Scholarship Fund at Blackville-Hilda High School or the Salkehatchie V. V. A. Veterans Park Fund. Memorials may be mailed to Post Office Box 160, Barnwell, South Carolina 29812. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, at the home at 15000 Dunbarton Boulevard, Snelling, S.C. from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the Barnwell United Methodist Church at 3:00 PM. A graveside service will follow at Seven Pines Baptist Church Cemetery in Snelling, S.C. The service also will be live-streamed on Mole Funeral Home's Facebook page.
