Effie Ritter Griffin WALTERBORO - Mrs. Effie Ritter Griffin, wife of the late L. Eugene Griffin Jr., died Sunday morning at Colleton Medical Center. She was 94. Mrs. Griffin was born in Ritter August 16, 1914, the tenth child of the late John Ealy Ritter and Kate Ellis Ritter Ritter. Mrs. Griffin was a steadfast woman of faith and an active member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Walterboro for as long as she was able to attend. She was a kindhearted and generous person throughout her life. Her love for her family was surpassed only by her love for her Lord, whom she served in many capacities. At the age of forty-nine, she attended nurse's training to become an LPN, and then worked in the hospital infant nursery for many years, until an automobile accident caused her to retire early. For sixteen years, she worked as a volunteer at the hospital. She loved to travel, and completed her first airplane trip to Hawaii at the age of seventy-one. She also traveled to England, the Holy Land, Egypt, Australia, and made mission trips to Brazil and Chicago. She was known for her beautiful handwork and quilting, both talents that she shared with those she loved. At the time of her husband's death on October 6, 1985, they had been married for fifty years, and she was the last surviving child of eight brothers and two sisters. She is survived by a daughter, June G. Hudson, of the home, and by a son, Carroll E. Griffin, and his wife Terry, of Walterboro. There are five grandchildren: Kimberly S. Murdock of Greenville, Stephany G. Muth of Blufton, Kent S. Boone, of Butner, NC, Carroll E. "Cal" Griffin Jr. of Walterboro, and Jill G. Burttram, of Walterboro. Mrs. Griffin also has twelve great-grandchildren: Dustin and Savannah Murdock, Kadee, Ryan, Brandon, and Philip Muth, Callie, Gracie, and Clay Griffin, and Jennings, Olivia, and Jake Burttram. She is also survived by many loving and caring nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank her kind and caring nurses and caregivers: Nancy Fralin, Roebern Rivers, Irene Carter, Belinda Farmer, Beth Hiers, and the wonderful staff of Hospice Care of South Carolina. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 in Edgewood Baptist Church, with burial following in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6-8 PM at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home.
