Edwin Herrington, III WASHINGTON, DC - Edwin Fletcher Herrington III passed away peacefully at his Washington, DC home on the morning of Friday, April 12, 2019 after spending his last days with family at his side. He was 71 years old. Ed was born on January 26, 1948 and was raised in Waynesboro, Burke County, Georgia, where he became an Eagle Scout in 1961 with Burke County's Troop 25 and graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1966. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University in 1970 and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Georgia 1973. Ed received numerous academic awards including the Clemson Faculty Scholarship Award for the member of the graduating class with the highest Scholastic Achievement. Following an outstanding ROTC cadet career he was commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1970, and in 1971 served in Vietnam in the 23rd Infantry 'Americal' Division as a 1st Lieutenant. Following his military service and Graduate School, Ed worked as a professional Chemical Engineer for 36 years for Eastman Chemical Company and Holston Defense Corporation of Kingsport,TN. He participated in various projects and positions, including the Coal to Chemicals Plant and implementation of OSHA process safety regulations. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers. Following retirement from Eastman Chemical in 2009, Ed and his wife Susan moved to Charleston, SC, where he continued working as a consulting engineer for several years. In 2018, Ed and Susan relocated to Washington, DC to be closer their sons and grandson. Ed grew up in St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Waynesboro, and in his adult life was an active member at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kingsport, TN and St. James Church in Charleston, SC. With each church he was active in many community service and outreach programs. As an avid outdoorsman, Ed loved hiking, biking, and camping. He served as a role model for young people in his community for more than 20 years as a Cub Scout Den Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster, then Scoutmaster, for Troop 51 in Kingsport, TN. In those roles, he led groups of scouts on adventure expeditions to both Florida Sea Base and Philmont Scout Ranch. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Edwin Fletcher 'Buddy' Herrington and Anne Johnston Herrington; infant older brother Edwin Fletcher 'Chip' Herrington II, and sister Anne Tyler Herrington Daniel. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Susan Glen Herrington; sons William Mikell Herrington and John Fletcher Herrington; daughter-in-law Angela Christine Parsons; grandson John Henry Parsons-Herrington; brother James Michael Herrington; and sister Rev. Kit Herrington Brinson, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family invites you to a memorial service on Saturday May 18 at 11:00 am at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 515 S Liberty St Waynesboro, GA followed by a reception in the social hall. A burial service will follow later in the day at Magnolia Cemetery.
