Edwin Bealer Obituary

Edwin L. "Barry" Bealer Mt. Pleasant - Barry Bealer, 70, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of May 22, 2018, with his wife of fifty years and daughters by his side, after a long battle with chronic lung disease. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin L. Bealer are invited to attend his Memorial Service at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 25, 2018, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at a reception following the service at Hibernian Hall. Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Barry was born on March 25, 1948, in Arlington, Virginia, as the only child of the late Edwin Alexander Bealer and Anna Updike Bealer. He graduated from Greenbrier Military Academy and studied at the University of Richmond. He began his career as a piece goods buyer for Thalhimer's in Richmond, VA before joining his father in the beer distribution industry in Danville, VA. He and his family relocated to Charleston, SC in 1981 after buying into Bay Beverage Distributors. Barry was a dedicated husband, proud father, and loving grandfather. His quick wit and sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him. He was an avid reader, music lover and an Honorary Life member of Hibernian Hall, where he spent many hours perfecting his favorite pastime, gin rummy. He is survived by his wife, Deborah McClelland Bealer; two daughters, Stephanie Townsend (Robert) and Courtney Jones (Justin); and five grandchildren, Robbie and Abby Townsend; Emmy Kate, Allie Ryan, and Justin Jones, Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hibernian Society of Charleston Foundation, Inc., 105 Meeting St. Charleston, SC 29401, which provides needs based annual educational scholarships to deserving applicants attending The Citadel, The College of Charleston, and Trident Technical College. Dearest Debbie, Stephanie, and Courtney,
Although I may not be with you in person today, I have been with you spiritually and in my heart, as with Barry, all this week. I will honor this day, in kind, with all of you.
I smile when I think of Barry's wit, charm, and humor. It could diffuse any situation and would bring endless hours of entertainment and laughter. He was a man who, when in his presence, you felt truly appreciated. He was so kind and caring toward my brothers David, Mark and I when we were growing up although he claimed he knew nothing about being around children. It was only natural that he became a wonderful father to Stephanie and Courtney. Deb and Barry continued that role to the next generation when my daughter LeighAnn moved to South Carolina in 2007 and have been equally as loving and caring for my younger daughter Hailey. Generosity of time, love, and compassion has no time line in family- it's always there.
I am truly grateful to have been part of Barry's life. More so, I am forever blessed that he was part of mine.
Always in my heart,
Your loving niece,
Lyn

We are saddened by the passing of our "so loved" brother-in-law, Barry. He had a quick wit, a keen sense of humor, and a voracious appetite for reading and learning (especially history). Most importantly, he loved, and was equally loved, by his entire family who could always rely on his caring support in whatever situation they found themselves involved. We will miss you, dear Barry, and were proud to have you as our Brother. Sincere condolences to Debbie, Stephanie, and Courtney and all their families. Stay strong in the knowledge that Barry he will no longer have to endure the pain and is now at peace with our Lord.
