Edward Roberts Obituary

Edward F. "Ed" Roberts MADISON, IN - Mr. Edward F. "Ed" Roberts, age 80, of Madison, Indiana, formerly of Greensboro, North Carolina, entered into eternal rest Monday, October 24, 2011 at 9:47 a.m. at his home in Madison, Indiana. Ed entered this life on April 28, 1931 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was the loving son of the late, Orin E. & Susie Belle Leggett Roberts. He was raised in Charleston from the second grade and was a 1949 graduate of North Charleston High School. He attended the Draughn School of Commerce in Atlanta, Georgia for two years. He was united in marriage on January 7, 1951 in Charleston Heights Baptist Church to Mary Betty Flowers. This happy union was blessed with four sons. Ed was inducted into the United States Air Force on Feb. 8, 1951 in Columbia, South Carolina. He rose to the rank of Airman First Class serving the 5700th Air Base Group during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 28, 1954 from Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, receiving the National Defense Service Medal. He resided in Clinton, Mississippi from 1971-1978. Ed moved to Greensboro, North Carolina in 1978 and then to Madison in 2010. He was employed as the Chief Property Officer with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1971-1998. He also worked in the Business and Real Estate Insurance in South Carolina for several years. Ed was a member of the Hammerton No. 332 Masonic Lodge in Charleston, South Carolina; Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion; Past President of the Charleston Board of Underwriters; Past President of North Charleston Rotary Club; member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 55; Past Commander of Greensboro No. 368 of the American Legion and was a member there for 47 years; member of the Ryker's Ridge Baptist Church near Madison; a charter member of the Cooper River Baptist Church in North Charleston; and a 30 year member of the Lawndale Baptist Church in Greensboro; he served as church training director of the Charleston Baptist Association for ten years; and former moderator for the Piedmont Baptist Association. Ed enjoyed collecting stamps, shopping and being with his wife and family. Edward will be missed by his loving wife of sixty years: Betty Flowers Roberts of Madison, Indiana; his loving sons: Holly S. Roberts and his wife, Sue of Madison, Indiana, Edward F. Roberts, Jr. and his wife, Lee of Charleston, South Carolina, Rev. Dr. David B. Roberts and his wife, Melissa of Lenoir, North Carolina; his adoring grandchildren: Edward Lee Roberts, Heather Suzanne Roberts Zeitlin, Ashley Roberts, Emily Roberts, Luke Roberts, Isaac Roberts & Bethany Roberts; his great-grandchildren: Carys Roberts, Mary Baylee Zeitlin & Lydia Grace Zeitlin; several nieces, nephews & other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orin E. & Susie Belle Leggett Roberts; his brother, Henry Carlton Roberts; his son, James "Jimmy" Orin Roberts died in Nov. 1993. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., by Dr. Paul Brewster and the Rev. Dr. David Roberts at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana. Friends may call Thursday from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Full military honors will be conducted at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Chapel by Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion & the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Ceremonial Unit. The family requests memorials in memory of Edward to the Gideon's Memorial Bible Plan, contribution cards are available at the funeral home. Ed was always such a fun guy to be around. He always had a joke to tell and could keep you entertained for hours. His words at my dad's funeral were truly inspiring and we will miss him very much.

Sorry to hear about Ed. My sympathy to his wife and family. I only worked with Ed a few years at HUD but he would always stop to see me in my offices for the last 30 years. His last visit was to tell me about his move to Indiana.He would make you smile with his wit and stories.. Ed-- I know you will always hang in my mind "like a hair on a biscuit" Peace my friend...
