Edward Rice Obituary

Dr. Edward A. Rice, Jr. Charleston - Edward A. Rice Jr., of Charleston, SC, died on June 28, 2017, at MUSC, following a tragic car accident. He was born on February 24, 1947 in New York, New York, the son of the late Margaret Koontz Rice and Edward Ambler Rice. Ed was raised in Clemson, SC and graduated from Davidson College and MUSC. He was married to Elizabeth Fleischman Rice (Bob) for 25 years. They had two daughters, Margaret Killian Rice of Charleston, SC and Corday Elizabeth Rice (Tommy) of Arlington, WA. Ed is survived by his ex-wife, Beth; daughters; son-in-law, Tommy Grammer; sister, Margaret "Peggy" Rice Gerling (Michael) of Biburg, Germany; nephews, Peter Gerling of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ed Heyward (Hattie) of Huntington Beach, CA, Keith Heyward (Julia) of Providence, RI, and Alexander Nisbet (Kina) of Seattle, WA; nieces, Diana Gerling Oehmen(Markus) of Munich, Germany, Bet Heyward of San Francisco, CA and Caroline Nisbet of Chapel Hill, NC; cousins George M. Hearn, Jr. (Kaye) of Conway, SC, Peter Lee Hearn (Julie) of Conway, SC, John Judson Hearn (Jane) of Columbia, SC, and Andrew Wrenn Hearn (Christine) of Alpharetta, GA and their children. He was predeceased by his aunt, Martha Sink Hearn, uncle, Bob Rice, and brother-in-law, Mark Fleischman. Ed lived in Charleston since 1971 and was a devout member of AA since 1994. He loved the outdoors, bird watching, visiting his daughters, and once-a-week dinner and cards with Beth and her husband (his dear friend) Bob Seigler. Most of all, he loved spending time with his three unruly dogs, Colby, Cooper, and Cotton. He also loved his grand dogs very much, and his special furry friend Brady who he took on weekly outings while his moms, Cameron and Beth, were at work. He wake boarded until turning 70 in February and had definite plans to go a couple of more times this summer. He visited his loving friends John and Donna Welborne, of Morganton, NC often and was especially fond of their children, Dalton and Shelby. He kept in touch with old and new friends via phone and email, and if your were lucky, you'd get one of his letters he typed on his typewriter and sent by regular mail. He will be dearly missed by all. Ed worked as an emergency physician for many years at Trident Regional Hospital in North Charleston, SC. He also worked in Palm Coast, FL and Valdese Hospital near Morgantown, NC. J HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, is in charge of arrangements. His family will follow his wishes and celebrate his life by not having a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to The Charleston Animal Society, "Through torrents of tears we tried to console one another but failed. How many times had we prepared ourselves for this destined event? I felt as though I saw his soul in the form of a majestic raptor soaring over the river where we swam. In the afternoon sun, ever ascending circles into sky, azure blue." (Excerpt from Ed's notes, kitchen table, June 2017, regarding passing of one of his beloved grand dogs.) A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Only now have I learned of Ed's passing. I met him when he volunteered at Botany Bay, and got to know him when Colby bit my hand on my last day on Edisto! I made a foolish mistake but Ed acted as if I were saintly to accept responsibility. He made sure I got antibiotics before leaving SC and kept in touch to be sure I healed well. He took us to dinner the following year at Po' Pigs and was just the kindest and most gentle man. We talked about Carew Rice - I have my mother's Uncle Wiggily silhouette, possible family connections, etc. I am so glad to have known him and I truly hoped to see him again one day. I know he is sadly missed by many.

It was a wonderful supportive position at the Outer Banks medical center in nags head North Carolina. I worked with him as a physician assistant there in primary care as well as emergency medicine. Many fun and tragic times there as a remote medical facility
Enjoyed working with Ed so much and sorry to hear about this tragic accident.

I worked with Ed at Valdese General Hospital. I was one of the physicians on call frequently for my own patients and unassigned patients who didn't have a physician. We had many conversations as I was waiting for lab work or xrays on a patient we were going to admit. I really enjoyed his sense of humor and his kindness towards his patients. I also greatly respected his sense of humility. The medical community will truly miss him. Ed Bujold, MD

When we first met Ed, he was a friendly neighbor with an endless supply of good-humored stories and an affinity for chocolate labs. Four years later, I would liken the relationship we had with Ed to that of a family member, especially for our brown dog, Brady. I feel so incredibly lucky that Ed came into our lives and that we had the opportunity to have known him. It's rare to encounter a person so kind-hearted, interesting, and with such a zest for life. As a good friend said to me after Ed's passing, Ed was one of those people who gave us memories we're glad to have experienced. He made us appreciate the good things in life. Coming across someone like that made it so tough to lose him, but he left us with something we didn't already have. I can only hope that we gave him even the slightest portion of what he gave us. There aren't enough words in the world to describe what a special person Ed was, but I have no doubt that all who had the pleasure of knowing him are better people for it. We already miss him terribly, but I smile so much when I think of him. Love and condolences to the Rice family.

We loved Ed very much and miss him terribly. He had become family to us and we looked forward to his regular visits. He gave us a different perspective on life in general and I'm sure we were able to solve at least some of the world's problems in our back porch discussions. We were glad for the opportunity to know him.

I will never forget working with Ed in the ER, and he was a legacy at Trident. He has always been one of my favorite people, and he will be greatly missed. I'll never forget the day I showed up at his house to pick up my mother, who was visiting her good friend, Ed's mother in law, Betty. In walks Ed....we look at each other and say, "Ed?'.."Lou?'...Beth, Mama, and Betty are looking at each other like "what the heck is happening here??" Ed and I laughed so hard about that. I even have pictures of Beth and her twin sister at one of my childhood birthday parties. He thought that was so funny! He had such a good sense of humor.
