Edward Overstreet Obituary

OVERSTREET, III, E. SYLVANIA - Mr. Edward Overstreet III, age 85, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at Screven County Hospital in Sylvania. The Screven County native was born February 19, 1921. He was raised in Sylvania and graduated from Sylvania High School in 1938. He graduated from GA Tech with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 as a Signal Corp Officer during WWII. He ended his service career as a Captain. He returned to Sylvania and married Evelyn Griner on May 18, 1946. He operated the family farm for many years. He was active in civic affairs in Sylvania where he was Mayor from 1962 until 1970 and also the City Manager from 1973 until 1987. He was Lions Club president in 1961 and 1962 and District Governor in 1967 and 1968. He was a member of the Sylvania First United Methodist Church. He was also a charter member of Briar Creek Country Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Griner Overstreet. Survivors include: daughters and son-in-law, Kathy Overstreet and Bob Owers of San Antonio, TX, Virginia Overstreet of Tampa, FL, and Beth Overstreet of Sylvania, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Edward K. IV and Zandra Overstreet of Walhalla, SC and Bob and Susan Overstreet of Summerville, SC; grandchildren, Kinch Overstreet of Gainesville, Ga., Emerson Overstreet of Summerville, SC, and Robert Owers of San Antonio, Texas; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 12, 2006, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Services: Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Sylvania First United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Charles Cravey officiating. Interment held at Sylvania City Cemetery. Pallbearers: Stuart Boykin, Glenn Boykin, Billy Howard, Kinch Overstreet, Emerson Overstreet and Robert Owers. Remembrances: family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity, church, or library of one's choice. THOMPSON-STRICKLAND-WATERS FUNERAL HOME in charge of all the arrangements. Penny and I are sorry for your loss. My Dad passed in 95 and Mom in 2003. Penny lost her brother 2002 but her Dad is going strong at 87.
