Edward Conradi Obituary

CONRADI, Edward Doctor Edward Conradi, 67, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Doctor Sandra Conradi, died Saturday, October 7th, at the Medical University Hospital, in Charleston, S.C. Born on June 18, 1939 in New Bremen, Ohio to the late Marjorie Conradi Lietz and the late Carl Conradi, Dr. Conradi received a B.S. from Otterbein College and an M.D. (1964) from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He served three years in Germany as a Major in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. In 1973, he took a position at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where he was a Professor of Pharmacology and Internal Medicine and served as Chairman of the Investigational Review Board (IRB) for Human Research. Since 1999, he has acted as the University Compliance Officer. Ed lived his life deeply, guided by his passion for others, and his fascination with the infinite intricacies of the universe and life on earth. In his professional life, he made important, lasting contributions to MUSC by helping to ensure that every patient was treated with integrity, fairness and the highest level of professionalism. Over his thirty plus year tenure, he shared his knowledge, wisdom, and humor, with hundreds of patients and medical students. Outside of work, he pursued his diverse interests to the fullest - from birdwatching to opera to photography and videography and science fiction. He was a familiar sight at Lowcountry bird counts, with his Tilley hat, binocs, and uncanny ability to identify birds by ear, as well as at the Cincinnati Symphony Hall and Metropolitan Opera House. He traveled to both Poles to observe the penguins of the South, and the polar bears of the North, and visited far away places such as Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and the Kamchatka Peninsula in search of unusual birds and other wildlife. Between adventures, he took time to visit his homes away from home in Montana and Ohio, and to share his superb videos, photographs, and stories with friends and family along the way. His legacy of loyalty and generosity will live on in all those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Dr. Sandra Conradi of Mount Pleasant, SC, three daughters, Diane Conradi of Whitefish, Montana; Elaine Eustis of Corbin, Kentucky; Karen Conradi Deschenes of Portland, Oregon and five grandchildren will miss his powerful spirit. A service to commemorate Dr. Conradi's life will be held at St. Luke's Church at the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina on October 19, 2006 at 12 Noon. Memorials may be made to the New Bremen Historical Society, New Bremen, Ohio, 45869. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

Dear Dr. Sandra, Diane, Elaine, Karen, and all grandkids and spouses,
I wish that I could be with you tom as you remember your loved one. I had known him most of my life. I always remember him eating our cookies and laughing as we did our silly girls things in the summers. As I grew older, I also remember him speaking fondly of Ohio and about his passion for birds and plants. Your family definately helped me with my decision to become a doctor and their encouragement always meant a lot. I always remember seeing your dad in the hallways at the hospital or on MUSC campus after I had a long day and he always stopped to smile and chat about what was going on. We will miss him and I hope peace and love surround you and that you will pass on all the great memories to the next generation. Sending you many hugs. Love always,Kay Durst Rose and family

Sandra,
I don't know if you remember me or not, but we served on the MUSC
Faculty Senate together in the early '90's. I was shocked to hear of
Ed's illness and death. He was a fine gentleman, and was such an
advocate for research and "user friendliness" when working with
the IRB. Please know how much he will be missed. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Respectfully,

Polly Holden

To the Conradi family,
My sincerest sympathy as well as my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Although I had not seen Ed in a few years I do recall his "wit and wisdom" and his passion for birdwatching vividly. May God's peace be with you.

Dear Dr. Sandra, Diane, Elaine and Karen:

We are truly sadden to hear of the passing of Dr. Conradi. Dr. "C", as I would call him was a great researcher, a compassionate physician, a champion for his beloved Hypertension Clinic, wonderful boss and a loyal friend.

We echo your comments of Dr. Conradi's passion for others, his humor as well as him love of the great outdoors. He was an exceptional man who was able to relate to anyone on any level at anytime. Mere words cannot articulate just how much respect and love we had for Dr. Conradi.

Our family will always remember the fun we shared during the many GCRC cookouts hosted at your home. Thank you for these wonderful memories. After working with and knowing Dr. Conradi for over twenty-seven years, I feel that I can make these comments with confidence and assurance. He Was The Best!!!

You are in our prayers.

Dr. Conradi and Family,
Just learned of the death of your husband and the girls' father when I read the newspaper today.
Please know that I will think of you and yours during this time.
Since my retirement from the Coroner's Office I have not had any contact with you, but want you to know how much I appreciated all of your help during those years.
I will keep you and your daughters in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Sandra: How utterly distressesd I was to learn of Ed's passing. I wish I had known he was sick, because I would have gone to see him. Hope you are doing ok. I cannot believe he is gone at the young age of 67 and did not get to enjoy retirement. Please know that you (and, the kids) are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Rebecca

Ed's departure leaves a gaping hole in South Carolina's community of field ornithologists. As with so many young 'birders', Ed was a mentor of mine who first taught me the importance of videotaping our vanishing wildlife species. His wisdom, compassion for all creatures, unfailing good humor and modest, yet towering intellect will be keenly missed by naturalists all over the world.
