Edward Buckley Obituary

BUCKLEY, Edward Entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 29, 2006 Edward Daniel Buckley husband of Lee Walters Buckley. Mr. Buckley was born in Charleston, a son of Edward Daniel Buckley and Mary Juanita Cherry Buckley on Wednesday, November 19, 1919. He was a graduate of Bishop England High School Class of 1936 and the College of Charleston Class of 1940. Mr. Buckley taught school and coached boys and girls basketball at Moultrie High School for two years. He was inducted into the Unites States Army as a private in April 1942 and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry at Ft. Benning Officer's Candidate School on December 24, 1942. Mr. Buckley served with the 77th Infantry Division 307 Infantry Regiment through the invasions of Guam, Leyte and Okinawa and was wounded at Leyte and Okinawa. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star with "V" with a cluster and the Purple Heart with a cluster. Mr. Buckley was transferred in 1945 to the Unites States Army Reserve and retired in 1968 as a Lieutenant Colonel. At the conclusion of World War II, he attended the University of Michigan Law School under the G.I. Bill and graduated in 1948. Mr. Buckley returned to Charleston to practice law with the firm of Cosgrove and Bailey. In 1949 he married the former Lee Walters of Nappanee, Ind. That same year upon the death of John I Cosgrove Mr. Buckley and Frank H. Bailey formed the law firm of Bailey and Buckley practicing for many years at The Pink House in downtown Charleston. He remained a partner in that firm until his retirement in 1993. Mr. Buckley was a member of the Charleston County, State of S.C. and American Bar Association, the S.C. Trial Lawyers Association and the S.C. Defense Trial Attorneys Association. He was a permanent member of the Fourth United States Court of Appeals Judicial Conference. He served as the first general counsel for the Charleston County Aviation Authority from 1970-1992 and was Township Counsel for the Town of Sullivan's Island where he was instrumental in assisting the citizens of Sullivan's Island to attain independent township status. Mr. Buckley was past president of the Alumni Association of the College of Charleston; past president of the S.C. Lung Association; past president of the Tuberculosis and Health Association of Coastal Carolina; former chairman of the board of trustees of the Charleston County Hospital; former Exalted Ruler, trustee and past state president of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 424. He was a member of the Hibernian Society of Charleston, Lions Club, Navy League, College of Charleston Foundation and the "Memory Hold the Door" Committee of the S.C. Bar Association. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Lee Walters Buckley, a son Edward D. Buckley and two grandsons, Edward D. Buckley, III and Justin W. Buckley all of Charleston. The family will receive friends at the JAMES A. McALISTER FUNERAL HOME, 1620 SAVANNAH HWY., this Wednesday evening between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Edward D. Buckley are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery. The family has requested memorials be made to Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Ave., Suite 101, North Charleston 29405 or to the College of Charleston Foundation, 66 George St., Charleston, SC 29424-0001.
