Edgar Rugheimer Obituary

Edgar Wetzel Rugheimer, Jr. MT. PLEASANT - Edgar W. Rugheimer, Jr. died on November 13, 2014, at his home in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina after extended illness. His Funeral Service will be held graveside at Magnolia Cemetery on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Born February 24, 1929, in Charleston, SC, he was the only child of the late Edgar Wetzel Rugheimer, Sr. and Ida Thee Rugheimer. A graduate of Porter Military Academy, Ed attended The Citadel and graduated from Newberry College in 1950, with a B.S. degree in Commerce. He also earned degrees from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Command and General Staff College. Ed Rugheimer joined the South Carolina National Guard in 1947, and transferred to the Army Reserve in 1955. He joined the 1182nd Terminal Transportation Unit and stayed with that unit until 1972. Ed later joined the 1189th U.S. Army Reserve School where he was responsible for all of the Command and General Staff College instructors for the Southeast. In 1984, he retired from the Army Reserve after 38 years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Within five years he joined the newly formed South Carolina State Guard where he retired as a Brigadier General in 1991. In his civilian life Ed worked at the accounting firm of McKnight and Frampton, South Carolina Electric and Gas Company and retired from Home Federal Savings and Loan Association after serving almost 30 years as comptroller, treasurer and vice president. Ed Rugheimer served as president of the German Friendly Society and the Arian Society and was a secretary and lifelong member of the Sertoma Club of Charleston. He also served as commander of the Washington Light Infantry from 1996 to 2000. Ed Rugheimer was a former member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church and later a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret "Peggy" Minnis Rugheimer of the Franke Home in Mt. Pleasant and several cousins.
