Earnest Ewers Obituary

Earnest Grover Ewers, known to all as Grover, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on March 16, 1943, in Summerville, South Carolina, Grover was the beloved son of Amos and Gladys Ewers. A true Southern gentleman with a heart as big as the Edisto River he called home, Grover lived a full and vibrant life surrounded by the people and places he loved most. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, earning the rank of E4 before returning to civilian life, where he spent many dedicated years working in the railroad industry. Grover was a devoted husband, having shared over 64 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Barbara Ewers. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family; bond that stood as an example to all who knew them. After retiring, Grover put his passion for cooking to good use by starting a successful catering business that brought joy and full bellies to countless friends and neighbors. Known for his mouthwatering dishes, Grover's food, and the stories he told while serving it, made every gathering feel like a celebration. Grover was a man who never met a stranger. His easy laugh, kind heart, and unforgettable presence made him the life of every party. He had more friends than he could count, and he treasured each one like family. Whether he was fishing, hunting, or just sitting by the river with his loyal dog, Jinx, Grover lived each day with gratitude and joy. Deeply committed to fellowship and service, Grover was a proud Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Jesters organization. He also took great pride in being part of the Hillbilly Clan 82, where his humor and warmth made him a cherished brother among brothers. Above all else, Grover believed in the power of family, friendship, and bringing them all together. It wasn't just a part of his life-it was the way he lived it. His legacy is one of laughter, loyalty, and love, and he leaves behind a community that is better because he was in it. Grover will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. A visitation of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, from 2pm to 5pm at Faith Church – Ridgeville, 1185 Cypress Campground Road, Ridgeville, SC 29472. The funeral service will begin at 5:00pm with burial immediately following at Bonnerest Cemetery, 360 South Main Street, Ridgeville, SC 29472. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Ewers; his children: Debra Mackey (Rudy) and William "Bill" A. Ewers (Robin); his grandchildren: Lindsey Kurtnacker (Jimmy), Dan Taylor (Ashley), Christopher Mackey (Heather), Lauren Hayes (Jon), Kyle Ewers (Amanda), Chelsea Cronk (Casey), and Haley Freeman (Ashby); his great grandchildren: Eli, Caiden, Emma, Bella, Lillian, Lucas, Lucile, Mikayla, Braelyn, Parker, Owen, Barrett, Jaxson, Jacob, Emmy, Easton, and El; his sister, Joan Owen and sister in law, Martha Ewers; as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Earnest Grover Ewers, Jr.; his parents; as well as his siblings: Pete Ewers, James "JW" Ewers, Teddy Ewers, Muriel Greenleigh, and Doris Ayers.
