E. Rice Obituary

RICE, JR., E. Carew BEAUFORT, S.C. - E. Carew Rice, Jr., 81, widower of Beverly Beach Rice, died Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at the home of his daughter in Beaufort. Graveside services will be Friday at 12:00 PM at the Rice Family Cemetery, Brickhouse Plantation, Wiggins, South Carolina, directed by Copeland Funeral Home. Mr. Rice was born December 21, 1923, in Savannah, Georgia, a son of Charleston Silhouette Artist Edward Carew Rice and Letitia Thomas Rice. He was raised in Wiggins, South Carolina, and attended Colleton County, South Carolina, schools and Knoxville, Tennessee, schools. He was a US Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was wounded in Okinawa. He was a graduate of The Citadel with a degree in engineering. He was formerly co-owner of Rice & Santos Mechanical Engineering, Charleston, South Carolina. He was predeceased by a son, E. Carew Rice, III. Surviving are: a daughter, Melissa R. Wicker of Beaufort; a sister, Elizabeth C. Philpot of Charleston, South Carolina; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army Hurricane Relief, Post Office Box 105, Beaufort, South Carolina 29901.
