E. O'Bryan Obituary

Dr. E. Conyers O'Bryan, Jr. Florence, SC - Dr. E. Conyers O'Bryan, Jr., 82, of Florence, South Carolina, died Sunday, May 21, 2017 in Charleston, SC. His funeral service will be held Thursday, May 25, 2017 in the First Presbyterian Church of Florence, SC, at 4:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Interment with military honors will be private. Arrangements by Stoudenmire-Dowling Florence, SC and J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant, SC. Born April 2, 1935 in Kingstree, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Edward Conyers O'Bryan, Sr. and the late Margaret Huggins O'Bryan. He earned his BA Degree in 1956 from the University of South Carolina and his Medical Doctors Degree in 1960 from the Medical University of South Carolina where he was a member of the AOA Honorary Medical Society, after which he served in the United States Marine Corps. Dr. O'Bryan was the founder and director of the Coronary Care Unit for McLeod Regional Medical Center from 1966-1995 and retired from private practice in 2017 after 51 years of dedicated service to his community. He served on the board of trustees for MUSC from 1976 until the present and as chairman from 1994-1996, 1996-1998 and 2000-2002 while also serving on the board of directors for the Hollings Cancer Institute. Dr. O'Bryan received an Honorary Doctor of Humanity from Francis Marion University in December 2004 and the Order of the Palmetto in 1995. He wrote numerous publications and made many scientific contributions in the fields of medicine and cardiology. Dr. O'Bryan was a longtime member and deacon at First Presbyterian Church, Florence. There aren't words to describe the impact Dr. O'Bryan had on the many lives he touched by his service in the State of South Carolina, holding leadership positions on local, state and national levels. Most of all, Dr. O'Bryan will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather; he loved and was beloved by his large extended family and circle of friends. He leaves a lasting legacy in the lives of the many whom he mentored in medicine and in life. He considered it his utmost privilege to treat the countless number of patients entrusted to his care. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jennie F. O'Bryan, son, Edward C. O'Bryan, III, M.D. and his wife Claire, and granddaughter, Evelyn Margaret O'Bryan of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Marion Hicks of Alpharetta, GA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Anna Kirwin. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Edward Conyers O'Bryan Jr., MD Fellowship in Global Health.
