E.H. Townsend Obituary

E.H. "Harry" Townsend, Jr. WADMALW ISLAND - E.H. "Harry" Townsend, Jr. passed away on Monday, June 19, 2023 after a brief battle with cancer. Harry was born on November 19, 1941 in Charleston, SC, the son of Edward Henry Townsend and Mary Beckett Townsend. Growing up in the village of Rockville, SC, he enjoyed all the benefits the lowcountry had to offer-crabbing, fishing, shrimping, hunting, and sailing along with its beauty and serenity. Harry graduated from Clemson University with a BS in Horticulture and a love of anything related to Clemson. He was employed by Charleston County DHEC. Harry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Legare Townsend; two daughters: Amanda I. Townsend (Jonathan) and Katherine T. Albright; grandchildren: Anna L. Albright and James A. Albright all of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by his sister, Mickey Thrower of Philadelphia, PA; brother, Thomas S. Townsend (Marie) of Charleston, SC; sister-in-law, Sarah L. Stuhr (Frederick) of Wadmalaw Island, SC; brother-in-law, Ned Legare (Cindy) of Wadmalaw Island, SC; and nieces and nephews: Sarah, Michael and David Thrower of Philadelphia, PA; Michael and Heyward Townsend of Charleston, SC; Charlotte Edwards of Charleston, SC; Caroline Padgett of Wadmalaw Island and Asheville, NC and Ben Legare of Portland, OR as well as many cousins. With his love for all things Wadmalaw, Harry served on the Wadmalaw Island Planning Committee and was a past Commodore of the Sea Island Yacht Club. The family extends many thanks and gratitude for the care by Wren Hospice. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lowcountry Land Trust, (lowcountrylandtrust.org) or the #BecauseLoganWood Campaign (becauseloganwood.com) to "promote boat safety and overall love of the outdoors." A service and visitation will be held at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
