Duncan McBray Getsinger CHARLESTON - January 27, 1924 - May 14, 2023 Duncan McBray Getsinger, Charleston, SC, a member of America's Greatest Generation, passed away on May 14, 2023. He was born on January 27, 1924, and was the youngest of five siblings born to John and Alice Getsinger of Martin County, NC. He is predeceased by his parents; wife, Jo Ann; brothers, Archibald, John, Samuel; and sister, Thelma. He is survived by son, John Theodore Getsinger and wife, Robyn; grandsons; Andrew Duncan and Bryan Thomas Getsinger, all of Charleston; daughter, Lisa Getsinger Jones and husband, Randall; grandchildren, Carley Rierson and Madeline Glenn Jones all of Durham, and Alexander McBray Jones and wife, Rese of Washington, DC; and son, Kurt Darden Getsinger, of Vicksburg, MS. Duncan was raised during the Great Depression on a family farm in eastern North Carolina near Dardens. After graduating from Plymouth High School, he attended Wake Forest and Mars Hill colleges, and the Medical College of Virginia. He served in World War II (US Army) and the Korean War (US Air Force). In 1946, he established a dental practice in Chapel Hill above Sutton's Drug Store on Franklin Street and was an active member of that community for 40 years. With other visionaries, he established Saint Thomas Moore Catholic Church and School in Chapel Hill and was a long-time friend of Immaculata Catholic School in Durham. He was the first NC-licensed pedodontist, establishing the Children's Clinic in Durham that served the Research-Triangle area for many decades. He relished coastal fishing in Virginia and the Carolinas, waterfowling in Mississippi, and preparing seafood and game feasts for family and friends. A humble and inspirational role model, he freely shared his considerable wisdom and experiences, was gracious and kind to everyone he met, and generously helped the less fortunate. He dearly loved his family. He was blessed with a long and meaningful life and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
