Douglas Vaughn Obituary

Douglas Warren Vaughn HANAHAN - Douglas Warren Vaughn, 29, of Hanahan, SC, lost his more than two year fight with a rare incurable cancer, DSRCT, while surrounded by his loving family and friends as a patient at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. He traveled to all the leading experts at Duke, Sloan Kettering, National Cancer Institute, City of Hope, Roper and Medical University of South Carolina. During his long and painful journey he made many new friends especially the kind nurses and doctors who treated him as a fellow human being. He participated in studies that prolonged his life and may help future cancer patients. Doug was an Eagle Scout from Troop 992 in Bethania, NC, a member of Old Town Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, a graduate of R.J. Reynolds HS in Winston-Salem and UNC Charlotte where he earned several honors while traveling all over Europe and South America as a member of Model UN. He found his dream job with AvVenta in Mount Pleasant, SC, where he enjoyed a second family and continued his world travels. Doug is survived by his fast friends from work and school, his "Grammy", Velma Vaughn of Sparta, NC, his parents, Harold and Priscilla Vaughn of Sparta, NC, two sisters; Pam Walls of Lilburn, GA and Sherry Kennedy of Dallas, TX; one brother, Jeff, of St Louis, MO, and several nieces and nephews, and extended family all over the country. Memorial donations may be made to any Ronald McDonald House or The Sarcoma Foundation designated to Sarcoma research. Family and friends will meet at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, November 1, at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, NC. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. N. Fred Jordan, UMC District Superintendent, will begin at 3 p.m. Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/deaths

I was shocked when I heard the news the other day of Doug's passing. I was a good friend of his when he lived in Kansas and will miss him terribly. My prayers go out to the Vaughn family.

Doug was an amazingly strong person, to such depths of strength I can't even fathom. I am grateful for the time I knew him and the good memories we had.
May you rest in peace Doug, thank you for teaching me to be strong in what may come.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as we mourn this brave man's life. May God grant us the peace Doug now knows in heaven.

Harold and Priscilla and the rest of the Vaughn family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this tough time. I have some good memories from those scouting days at Bethania Moravian church. The lock-ins, the camping trips at your farm. Doug is in all of them. I hadn't seen Doug in many, many years but its obvious that during that period he was a very successful and caring human being who fought his illness to the end. May you find comfort knowing he is now at peace with the Lord.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. We were so sorry to hear of Doug's illness and now his death. Please know that we are praying for the peace that passes all understanding to be very present in your lives at this time.

Dear Vaughn Family,
I was devastated to hear of Doug's passing. He was such a large part of my life during my teenage years. I have so many good memories of which he is a part. Although we have lost touch, I think of Doug often with fondness and have said many prayers for him and for your family over the past few years. He has always held a special place in my heart. I know that Doug is in a better place now and is no longer in pain. I will always remember him as the strong athlete he was with a huge heart. Please know that I will continue praying for your family during this difficult time. Words cannot express the pain I feel for you at this time, but I know God is and will continue to be with you in this difficult time.

Doug was a man of character and strength. I admired him since we were kids in scouts together and am sorry to hear of his passing. Doug was a fighter who always took challenges head on, when it is my time, I hope to have his will power and positive outlook. To Harold and Priscilla, my deepest sympathies and prayers go out to you. Memories of Doug will always live on within all of his fellow scouts and friends.

Vaughn Family,
I am truely sorry for your loss. Doug was a great teammate and friend during our time at Reynolds. I will never forget the memories and all the games and practices I shared with #51.

Harold and Priscilla,
Doug always held a very special place in our hearts -- we credit him with saving our son's life. When Doug was working at Old Town Baptist Children's Center, our son Tyler fell backwards out of a swing (that was very high off the ground at the time). Doug caught him so that Tyler never hit the ground! Doug always had our utmost gratitude for that event.

Our prayers are with you.

Priscilla and Harold,
My heart goes out to you and your family. Doug has always been one of the young men that came into our lives that touched us the most. He was always so full of laughter and enjoyed life to the fullest. I remember the year he went to the beach with us.
He and Jeffrey skunked me and Alan in basketball. We never told them, but we were so sore the next day we could hardly walk.

Our prayers will be with you all in the days ahead.

My Dear Harold and Priscilla,
My prayers are with you and all your family. I am so so sorry. My heart breaks with you. Knowing where he is doesn't remove the hurt, but it does give us the assurance that we will be together again. Love, Jennifer Hethcox
