Douglas Carney Obituary

Douglas Lamar Carney SUMMERVILLE - Douglas Lamar Carney, 54, of Summerville passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2015. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 10 at 2:00 pm at Summerville Presbyterian Church. He was born and raised in the Athens, GA area and graduated from Cedar Shoals High School and the University of Georgia. He enjoyed a successful career working for 15 years as a systems analyst for Georgia Power in Atlanta, Georgia before his involvement in the Roaring 20's Sunday school class at Peachtree Presbyterian Church led him to a call to ministry. Lamar graduated from Louisville Theological Seminary with a Master's degree in Divinity and a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church and served churches in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Georgia. At the time of his death he was the Associate Pastor at Summerville Presbyterian Church. Lamar had a passion for spiritual growth ministry. He loved preaching, teaching both adult and children's Sunday school classes and working with youth in confirmation classes. He was an avid Georgia football fan and loved his family pets, especially his dog Cookie, who was known to occasionally accompany him to visit shut-in church members. He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen Carney, and children Christine, Cotter, and Samantha Smith, by his mother-in-law, Janet Churchill, and his brother-in-law, Glenn Churchill, and by his sisters, Suanne Felles, Debbie Kellum, Tracy Barrett, Michelle Gay, Dawn Akins, and Kelly Weaverling. He is also survived by Wiley Carney, Nancy Robertson, and Tracey Taylor. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, church members, and everyone whose lives were touched by his ministry. Memorials in his honor may be made to Summerville Presbyterian Church. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Dear Ellen,
I'm so very sorry for your loss. Lamar was dear to my friends the Mefferts, and by extension was dear to me, although I never knew him. May the Lord hold you tenderly during this time of deep grief.

I am deeply saddened by Lamar's death. I was on the pastor nominating committee which brought him to First Presbyterian Church in Milledgeville, Ga. During his short time in our church he was not only my pastor, but my personal friend. We regularly visited the sick and home bound members from our church and he referred to me as "bubba" which made me feel that we had a very close relationdship. I will miss him, but not as much as his family will. I extend by deepest sympathies to them.

We have missed him so much. It was such a pleasure to meet his family when they came through Milledgeville. He will always have a special place in our hearts.
