Doug Born Obituary

Doug C. Born CHARLESTON - Douglas Charles Born, 69, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday July 7th, 2016. A celebration of Doug's life will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 5pm at The Bridge Church, underneath the I-26 overpass on Huger St. in Charleston. At the conclusion of the service, hotdogs and other refreshments will be served. Doug is survived by his son, Ricardo Goncalves (Beatrice); siblings, David (Gloria), Terry (Angela), Nicholas, Beryl (Stan), Anne (Brian), preceded in death by siblings, Peter (Janice), Brian (Helen), Christopher (Geraldine) and Margaret; two grandchildren; and 17 nieces and nephews. Doug was born in London, England in 1946. After completing his education, Doug became a leader at an IT company in London, which included a generous salary and a very comfortable lifestyle. Doug then received a call from God to leave it all and become a full time missionary in 1986. As a missionary, he served his Lord in India, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Israel and here in the United States to California, New York and finally to South Carolina. The majority of his work concentrated on orphaned street children, sex slaves, persecuted indigenous tribes, drug addicts, pimps, slum dwellers, criminals, the forgotten and the hopeless. Once in South Carolina, Doug began walking the streets of North Charleston, looking for those in need of God's love and assistance. In recent years, Doug founded Barnabas Ministries which supports and started the Next Steps of Barnabas Ministries, located at St Matthew's Lutheran Church Community Outreach Center on Marion Square. Barnabas Ministries/Next steps have and will continue to provide food, clothing, prayer and life coaching to those in need. Doug was also very involved in starting a Hot Dog Ministry and The Bridge Church where the homeless are fed five nights a week. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Barnabas Ministries of Charleston or Scripture Union India. The website where you can make donations to Barnabas Ministries is www.barnabascharleston.com or PO Box 14166, Charleston, SC 29422. This is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and 100% of the funds will go towards the Next Steps program Doug worked so hard for to provide a "Hand-Up" while sharing the "Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ". The address to mail donations to Scripture Union India is 27, First Main Rd., United India Nagar, Ayanavaram, Chennai - 600023 India. Doug was affiliated with many churches in the Charleston area and was a member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church. ARRANGEMENTS BY TRI-COUNTY CREMATION CENTER, 11000 DORCHESTER ROAD, SUMMERVILLE, SC. Doug was the guardian angel of Next Steps of Charleston. He opened doors for us at St Matthew's and was always present when we served in this ministry to the poor and homeless of Charleston, SC. Just thinking of him puts a smile on my soul.

Doug, I know the first words you said in heaven when you met Jesus face to face, "Hi, it's Doug>"

Doug,
I miss your everyday calls of encouragement. I know that you are in heaven now but I still miss you.

Doug, like my father, was truly a humble and selfless soul. He did not care what others thought and lived with very little. Doug was always smiling and enjoyed coming out for family functions (holidays, birthdays).
What amazing work you did on this earth for the Lord and serving this community, now you can finally relax and dance with Jesus!
We love you Doug and we will see you again!

Doug, I will miss you! You have been such a great friend and brother in Christ. I have always admired you for the work you have done. Your sharp sense of humor always kept me on my toes. Wish we could of celebrated July 4th but you always said you celebrated July 5th.

Doug, I miss seeing your face and having your sense of humor here at the Cathedral. I knew it wasn't like you to not call or come in like you normally do. Then I heard the news, I prayed for you to get better. But I know God had a greater plan for you. You have impacted my life for the time that I have met you and I will always love you and think of you, especially when I watch Superman:). My prayers to the family, May God continue to keep you.
