I have nothing but good memories of Miss White. She was an excellent teacher! I am ALWAYS remembering something that she taught us. Much of the information on the SC State Teacher's Exam came from her senior English class. I was able to go back and visit her and tell her this. She was very pleased to hear it! I now realize that she was probably not surprised! I cannot even TEXT today without using proper punctuation and grammar---and I'm sure she is the reason! She will always be a part of my best high school memories, because she will always be a part of who I am. My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and loved ones. (NCHS '67)

Miss White was by far my favorite teacher in my senior year. She had a wonderful gift for teaching and instilled in her students a love a all things literary. I know my love of literature of all kinds is a direct influence of her. She was a wonderful person and I'll always remember her with admiration and fondness.

Miss White was definitely my favorite high school teacher. Her class was one I looked forward to even though I dreaded the possibility of one of her "pop" tests. A special lady and a truly special teacher!

I, too, was blessed to have Miss White as an English teacher. She was the best English teacher that I ever had. She really made English fun!

Miss White not only taught me English she also taught me Latin for two years. I hadn't seen her in in a long time, but she will be missed by all of us that knew her.

What can be said about Miss White that hasn't already been said. Simply put, she was the best teacher I ever had. She challenged us to reach higher than we ever realized we could. Her gentle nature allowed her students to feel comfortable around her, yet that same gentleness commanded such respect.
As a sophomore in college, when realizing I wasn't enjoying business administration, I changed my major to English. Upon reflection, I realized that Miss White had prepared me for that course of study better than I could have imagined.
Now my wife and both my children are educators. I'm so proud of all three, but my only regret is that they never got to spend time with Miss White. She'll forever be a significant influence on my life.

Ms. White was one of the few teachers that I fondly remember from my years at NCHS. I know my use of proper English was greatly influenced by her. A few years after my 1951 graduation I visited her in class and found my drawing of Shakespeare posted on her bulletin board. She will be remembered.

Senior English with Ms. White, I always loved that class. Ms. White inspired me to commit to memory long passages of great literature and to view the library as a gold mine. I don't know how she did it; but she never seemed to have to discipline us. Perhaps we behaved well because she exemplified the best behavior and had such quiet composure.
My sincere condolences to her family; how fortunate you were to have her.

What a world-class teacher and inspiration. Miss White prodded gently, firmly and purposefully, and we responded--even us nodders who'd been up since 4:30 delivering the News and Courier! I even remember how to diagram a sentence--of course, she was among the last to ever ask us to do that. To me she's the symbol of what NCHS was in those mid-50s days, and her legacy is the hundreds or thousands of readers, writers and thinkers she influenced. Without a doubt, the most memorable teacher I ever had.

Too often we have memories of the worst in our lives, but Dorothy White was one of the best in mine. She was unfailingly kind, composed, and thoughtful. She taught me French after a year of English, and freely admitted she was about a chapter ahead of the class because she had never taught it before. An author she recommended to me was Gladys Taber, and I believe she liked her because of her wonderful descriptions. I always smile when I think of Miss White, which has been often over all these years since 1957.

Miss White was truly the best teacher I ever had. I always remember how much everyone enjoyed her class, even though we had to have the "Thought and Reflection" cards each week. She will always be a good memory of North Charleston High School.

Our whole family always loved Miss White! When my husband Dave met her he understood why. We both looked forward to talking with her when we'd come home to N.Chas for our visits with Mama and Daddy.

To her neices, Caroline and Nancy, I want to say how sorry I am that I had to miss the memorial today. I would have loved to see you and catch up on your lives.

I loved Miss White's dry wit and her wonderful way of teaching us not just grammar and literature but also how to be better human beings. I don't think I ever write anything (with the exception of this - forgive me, Miss White) that I don't let it cool for 24 hours. She told us that what we write in the heat of passion and creativity just might not sound so good the next day!

What a wonderful influence she was to so very many. I think we were all so blessed to have a teacher like Miss White.

Dorothy White was a lovely lady and an exceptional teacher. She certainly fostered my love for language and literature and set a memorable example through her gentle manner and firm expectation that her students should respect each other and themselves.

Even though I never had Miss White as a teacher, I know she had tremendous influence on many lives she touched.
She was truly a beloved teacher by all who had the privilege of being a part of her class. She was a giver and a very special person.

Miss White really knew how to hone our writing skills. I had no problem with freshman English due to her tireless yet calm way to draw creativity from our writing attempts. She never raised her voice, yet could deliver criticism effectively and non-threateningly. I loved her class and contribute my efforts to teach for over 33 years to her influence. I was very lucky to have lived in an era where respect for both teachers and students was the norm. We had truly a great faculty at NCHS. Thank you, Miss White

I think I was an English teacher because of excellent teachers like Dorothy White. I had the pleasure of substitute teaching with her; she treated me as a colleague, not a student. If ever a teacher modeled correct behavior to her students, she did. Thank you, Miss White.

I remember Dorothy White as my English teacher at North Charleston High School in the late 1940's. She was always pleasant, quiet, dignified and a perfect example of a gracious southern lady. I am better for having known her.

I met Dorothy White when I began my teaching career at Bonds-Wilson High school. February 4, 1974. Her touch reached not just students but colleagues as well. Delightful is an adjective that fits so well. We all learn with and from each other every day, Dorothy exemplified that notion.

Ms. White was, without doubt, the most influential teacher of my high school years at North Charleston High School. I'll never forget doing "T&R cards (Think and React), and I kept a copy of the class compilation for many years. She truly taught us to think. Thank you, Ms. White, for finding and bringing out the best in all of us.

I will always remember my first day at Bonds Wilson during my senior year, Mrs White went to the Board and wrote THE BELL HAS TOLL, The phrase stayed on the board all year, some students asked on the last day of school why they didnt pass, Mrs White simply walks over to the board and takes her yard stick and points toward the board where the the phrase had rested all year, THE BELL HAS TOLL.. Thank you for leading me and teaching me to prepare ahead and on time.

My favorite high school teacher. Ms. White made a huge impression on me with her no-nonsense approach to teaching. I credit my love of the language even today to her guidance. Every time I run into a former teacher or student from North Chas., I always ask if they've heard anything about 'Dot White'. I used to see her walking around Park Circle years ago. God Bless her and the many students she influenced.
