Dorothy Urquhart Obituary

Dorothy Fugate Urquhart MT. PLEASANT - Dorothy Fugate Urquhart peacefully passed away at the age of 93 in the home of her family on Friday, June 14, 2024, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Dorothy was born on March 15, 1931, in Williston, Florida, the daughter of the late Wardell Rivere Fugate and Maude Clark Fugate. Dorothy Dell (named after her beloved father, Wardell) had a wonderful childhood growing up in Florida and went on to attend Longwood College for Women in Virginia and graduated from Stetson University in Florida. She was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Chapter fraternal organization where she held several positions including President. She later met and married Naval Officer Edward H. Urquhart, Sr. and moved to his hometown of Houston, Texas. She would live the rest of her years in Houston at the same homestead. In Houston, Dorothy served as one of the first female probation officers in Harris County, Texas, for over 40 years. She dedicated her life to helping others. Starting her career as a juvenile probation officer, Dorothy's compassion and empathy touched countless lives. She shared stories of those she helped, particularly on one occasion when she was leading a young girl down the detention hall with her hand on her outside shoulder. The girl, innocently believing she was being hugged, wrapped her arm around Dorothy's waist. Dorothy said after she realized what had happened, she simply smiled and brought the girl closer, continuing to walk with the two of them embraced. That moment encapsulated Dorothy's caring nature and her ability to naturally connect with those she touched. Dorothy had an insatiable curiosity and a love for adventure that took her to many corners of the world. She said her favorite travel experience was her first trip abroad to The Holy Land when invited by her parents, which sparked a lifelong passion for travel. She often traveled with her daughter, Tiffany, and continued to immerse herself in all areas of the world, and this natural curiosity led to her sharp intellect. She had a fascination with European history, especially the dynasties of monarchs. An avid reader, Dorothy created cozy reading corners filled with books on history and literature. Her deep appreciation for the natural beauties of the world could be seen by anyone who knew her, with her vast knowledge of passing flora, or her extensive geo collection and garden. In her later years, Dorothy was a devoted grandmother, declaring to be the kind of grandmother who was always present in her grandchild's life. She prioritized her relationship with her granddaughter, Lauren, above all else. She cherished the time they spent together, whether at "Camp Mimi" during annual summer visits, or by often coming to Charleston to be present in her life. During travels to foreign countries, the two were inseparable. Her warmth and unwavering support left a lasting impression on Lauren, whom she encouraged to live a life full of adventure and possibility. Described as unshakable yet caring and composed, Dorothy embodied the definition of tact. She was an intellect with a heart full of compassion, always being there for her family and friends. Her legacy of love, kindness, and adventure will continue to inspire all who knew her. Dorothy is preceded in death by her son, Edward Henry "Hank" Urquhart, Jr.; and survived by her daughter, Tiffany Poupore; her son-in-law, Michael Poupore; and her granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Poupore. She also leaves behind numerous friends and family members who will forever remember her warmth and generosity. Memorial contributions may be made to The National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016. A memorial message may be sent to the family on our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.
