Dorothy Sopalsky Obituary

Dorothy W. Sopalsky JAMES ISLAND - Dorothy W. Sopalsky, 92, of James Island, SC, widow of Joseph Sopalsky, passed away on January 29, 2013. She was born June 14, 1920, in Montclair, NJ. She and her devoted husband, Joseph, raised their family in Yonkers, NY, and Pearl River, NY. She worked in retail and real estate. In 1985 she and her husband moved from Warwick, NY, to James Island, where she enjoyed crafts and was active in senior citizens' groups. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Throughout her life she served her community in leadership roles in local civic organizations. Proud to have been born on Flag Day, she was one of The Greatest Generation working on the home front during WWII while Joe served in the US Army in Europe. She will be deeply missed by family and friends. She was predeceased by Joe, her husband of 69 years, who passed away in 2011. She is survived by two daughters and a son: Donna Sopalsky of Garnerville, NY, Barbara Carlson (Larry) of Wadmalaw Island, SC, and John Sopalsky (Sally) of Goshen, NY, and two granddaughters: Christine Sopalsky of Boston, MA, and Jessica Porter (Seth) of Boston, MA. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr of West Ashley. The funeral and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pet Helpers of Charleston or the charity of your choice. Mrs. Sopalsky was memorable. I'll never forget the lunch she made for John and me when we worked on his Ford Mustang back in 1982.
