Dorothy Pennebaker Obituary

Dorothy Pennebaker CHARLESTON - Dorothy Hunt Applegate Pennebaker peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 17, 2013 surrounded by her family. Her Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2013 in St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10:30 am. The Rite of Committal will be private in St. Lawrence Cemetery. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Dorothy was born February 16, 1919, was the daughter of Rosa Viguerie Hunt and Arthur Bradlee Hunt. She spent her childhood in New Orleans and Ocean Springs, Mississippi. She was a graduate of Ashley Hall, Merot Junior College and Georgia State Teacher's College. Though small in stature, "Granny Apple," as she was known by all, was a strong person. Her strength came from her faith, a lifelong devout Catholic, her family: a loving husband, three children, ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and an abiding love of nature. Growing up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the small town of Ocean Springs, she developed a lifelong love of all things associated with the water. She loved to swim, to sail and to crab. From her perch on Breezy Hill overlooking the gulf, she began her love affair with flying squirrels, pelicans, dolphins and seagulls. Her first association with Charleston, a city she has loved throughout her life, came as a boarder at Ashley Hall in the class of 1937. She returned to Charleston in 1943 and, shortly thereafter, went to work at Ashley Hall as a teacher and a coach. From her earliest days in Charleston she was involved in various community activities. She volunteered at the Footlight Players, she was a Gray Lady at the Naval Hospital, taught swimming at the Y, worked at the Historic Charleston Foundation and at the soup kitchen, among other things, leaving a wonderful legacy of service. A lifelong avid bridge player, golfer and tennis player, she loved to compete and she loved to win. She enjoyed her cocktail at five o'clock, a good story, a good laugh, a full moon and a sunset. She loved life, and as her Louisiana cousins would say, she was blessed with joie de vivre. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all those that knew her. She was predeceased by her first husband Edward Cuyler Applegate and her only brother Arthur Hunt, Jr. She is survived by her husband, William Fendall Pennebaker; her daughter, Susan Applegate Wilson Herrmann and her husband, Jack; her sons, W.E. (Sam) Applegate and his wife, True and Arthur Hunt Applegate and his wife, Cyndy. She is also survived by, Robert Wilson (Cindy) and his daughters Weesie and Susan; Harriet Wilson Lovejoy (Scott) and their children Ruthie, Walter and Anna Scott; Edward Wilson (Alexandra) Ducie Wilson Stark and her children Emma Cutter and Lucy; True Applegate Edwards (Lee) and their children Nat, Kathryn and Maggie; Elizabeth Applegate Dieck (Garrett) and their children, Eliza, Garrett and True; William Applegate IV (Lydia) and their children Sam and Ellis Edward Cuyler Applegate II (Cara) and their children Maclane and Hamilton; Emily Frances Applegate and Arthur Hunt Applegate Jr. She is also survived by three step-children and their families: James Pennebaker (Ruth), Ward Pennebaker (Susan) and Mary Pennebaker Truitt (Jim). The family would like to thank Granny Apple's caregivers, Mona Payton, Shonekia Lockwood, Julia Simmons and Roper Hospice for the excellent job they did in providing wonderful care during our time of great need.
