Dorothy Roberts Nielsen MT. PLEASANT - Dorothy Roberts Nielsen, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Born on January 23, 1933, in Charleston, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Juanita Roberts and William Henry Roberts. Dorothy grew up in the city of Charleston and graduated from Murray Vocational School. In February 1953, she married the love of her life, the late Robert Raymond Nielsen. Together, they began their family, which included a daughter and two sons, and settled in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Dorothy's greatest joy was being a devoted wife, mother, and most of all, a grandmother of two and a great-grandmother of three. In her younger years, she was very active in the PTA at the elementary school her children attended. She took great delight in hosting family gatherings and preparing meals for all to enjoy. She loved her role as "Nana" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy was very much a part of her two granddaughters' lives: attending all school activities through their college graduations, traveling often with them, going on shopping trips, and genuinely enjoying their time together. She also loved to travel to Costa Rica frequently, where one of her sons now resides. She was blessed by three great-grandchildren who loved her dearly. In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by ten siblings: June Henrietta (Han) Williams, William (Billy) Henry Roberts, Rose (Rosie) Lee Leonard, Catherine (Kitty) Juanita Gennaro, Thomas Olivia Roberts, Mary Marguerite (Margo) Fredrich, Stephen (Stevie) Rembert Roberts, Frazier Mathewes Roberts, Frances (Frankie) Elizabeth Roberts and Gustav (Gus) Richard Roberts. Dorothy is survived by her children, Dara Beth Nelson (Bob), Robert Raymond Nielsen, Jr. (Gayle), and David Clinton Nielsen. Grandchildren, Tara Nelson Spicer, (Jeff), Ashlie Nelson Ervin, (Tanner), and great-grandchildren, Jeffery Scott Spicer, Jr., Reese Mackenzie Ervin and Miles Nelson Ervin. Additionally, sisters-in-law, Sue Cammer, Joanne Roberts and Shirley Roberts, and many nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held Friday, March 7, 2025, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2520 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, SC at 11:00am. Also at this time, the family will celebrate the life of her late husband, Robert Raymond Nielsen, who passed away in 2020. Interment will be private.
