Doris Owens Obituary
OWENS, Doris Mrs. Doris Magill (Teeny) Owens, 85, of 203 George St., St. George, SC, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004 after a brief illness. Born June 26, 1919 in Lancaster, SC, she was the daughter of the late H. Boyd Magill and Grace Hamil Magill. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 at St. George United Methodist Church, 120 N. Parler Ave., St. George. Rev. Robert Lee and Rev. Dr. Wash W. Belangia officiating. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at BRYANT FUNERAL HOME, ST. GEORGE. Family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Owens, 406 Raysor St., St. George. Formerly the co-owner, editor and publisher of The Dorchester Eagle-Record (St. George), she was involved in its publication until her death. Her father founded the paper in 1934 and she was active in its publication for more than 70 years. Through her years at the newspaper, she reached out to the community, helping individuals and organizations and forming lasting friendships. Faithful, articulate, loyal, resolute in her strong beliefs, Teeny was devoted to family, friends, church and community. A member of the St. George, UMC, Teeny was a teacher in the nursery department for many years, was a member of the United Workers Sunday School Class and the Mary Bailey Circle of the United Methodist Women. As long as she was physically able, she worshipped each Sunday sitting on the fourth pew from the right front where her back pillow awaited her. A woman of faith, courage and anticipation of God's full glory, she quietly, firmly followed her Lord. She was an honorary member of The Little Book Club of which she had been a member for over 50 years. She was predeceased by her husband, William Oscar Owens, Jr.; a grandson William M. Owens, Jr.; sisters, Carolyn Johnson and Evelyn Way both of St,. George. She is survived by two sons, William M. Owens (Vickie), and Jerry B. Owens (Debby), and a daughter, Kathleen O. Gudridge (Lindsay), all of St. George; granddaughters, Julie O. McAlhany (Anthony), St. George; Maegan Gudridge, Haddonfield, NJ; Mollie Gudridge, St. George; Jessica Slater (Rob), Dayton, Ohio, and Ashley Owens, Clemson, S.C. and Wende Reynolds (John), Jacksonboro, S.C.; grandsons, David J. Owens (Angelia) and Boyd Owens, both of Columbia, S.C. and Owen Gudridge, St. George, Robert and Russell Danford, Burlington, N.C.; great-grandchildren Thomas, Nicholas and Julianna McAlhany, St. George; Alex Owens, Columbia; Benjamin and Aliza Reynolds, Jacksonboro. She is also survived by a twin sister, Dorothy Weirich of Florence and sister, Ann Hawkins of Orangeburg. The family suggests memorials be made to St. George United Methodist Church.
