Doris Hysmith Conner LADSON - On October 9, 2023, a beautiful fall day, Jesus wrapped his loving arms around Doris Virginia Hysmith Dickens Conner and escorted her to heaven. Doris was born December 15, 1927 in Charleston, SC to Wilhelmina and Clarence Hysmith. She was the widow of William "Wick" H. Conner. Doris attended North Charleston Elementary School and graduated from North Charleston High School in 1945. She completed one year at Winthrop College. She married Roy "Rudolph" R. Dickens in Coronado, CA on April 16, 1949, becoming a military wife. She enjoyed each duty station from Trinidad; Norfolk, Virginia; Brunswick, Maine; Millington, Tennessee; Patuxent River, Maryland; to lastly Bermuda Naval Air Station. Along the way, they had two daughters: Carol Elizabeth and Cynthia Elaine. Doris was content to be a military wife and stay-at-home mom. Upon returning stateside, Rudolph and Doris divorced. She began working as a secretary for Encyclopedia Britannica and then as a bookkeeper for Delta Electric. She became the church secretary for Midland Park Baptist Church, where she and her two daughters were active members. Later she worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Naval Legal Planning. She finished her career as a church secretary for Portside Baptist Church. She married William "Wick" H. Conner on December 27, 1975. They attended Cooper River Baptist Church and later Holmes Avenue Baptist Church. She is currently a member of Summerville Baptist Church. Upon Wick's death in 1998, Doris moved to Greenville and then to Spartanburg, SC to provide daycare for her first great-grandchild, Abby. She returned to the Lowcountry when Abby began first grade, settling in Southern Palms in Ladson, where she resided until her death. Doris enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing, listening to music, reading, and church related activities like teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and working with WMU. She leaves behind daughter, Carol Jones (Bob), of North Charleston, SC; daughter, Cynthia Waters (Jack) of Spartanburg, SC; step-daughters, Ann Davis (Roy), of Summerville, SC and Debora Brooks (Randy) of Lake Murray, SC; one grandchild, Jennifer Waters, of Spartanburg, SC; two great-granddaughters, Abby Mason Mears (Zach) of Kissimmee, FL and Spartanburg, SC and Chloe Smith, of Spartanburg, SC; one sister, Ruth H. Lipscomb, of Summerville, SC; and one niece, Lynda Scarborough, of Summerville, SC. She was predeceased by her parents; husbands; grandson, Jonathan Waters; son-in-law, Jesse "Buster" J. Dukes; and brother-in-law, Dewey B. Lipscomb. The family would like to express thanks to Jan, her caregiver with Home Instead, and to her nurses, Sissy, Ploy, and Sabrina with Intrepid Hospice for their tender care and concern for the Momma "Mama", Meme, great-grandmother, sister, mother-in-law, and aunt. Graveside service will take place at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Mausoleum Chapel on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 2:00 pm., 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406.
