DORIS BROWN Obituary

BROWN--Doris Loebenberg, 88, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Valhalla, White Plains and Utica, NY., died at home on May 31, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved and devoted wife of Raymond, mother of Alison Lukacsko and Diane Treuman and grandmother of Jeffrey and Michael Lukacsko and Emily and Daniel Treuman. Doris is also survived by an adoring son-in-law, Stanton Treuman, sister-in-law Barbara Brown, and several nephews and a niece. Doris was the glue in an unusually close knit family and was like a second mother to nephews Peter and Jim Freedman. She will be terribly missed. Doris was a graduate of The Dalton School in Manhattan and Pembroke College and was a founding member, sisterhood President and teacher at Temple Emanuel in Utica, NY. She was a lifelong advocate of public education. Doris was a public school psychologist and visionary in developing programs for learning disabled children; after a 30 year career, Doris retired and volunteered in the Gift Shop at White Plains Hospital. She loved traveling with her family, doing the New York Times crossword and was an expert and avid bridge player. Doris was always refined and a role model of unconditional love. She will be remembered for her optimism, energy for life, loyalty to friends and family and boundless grace. The family requests donations to American Cancer Society. I stumbled across a photograph of Doris while looking through the Pembroke Records archives. A Google search brought me here. She must have been a fabulous scholar and I'm interested in doing some writing about her, especially as to her contributions to school psychology and curriculum design for learning disabilities. I've attached a photo from The Pembroke Record, I believe from 1942. She was chairman of the "War Stamps" committee.

I started working with your mother way back in 1966 and remember how very helpful - and "on target" she was for all our time together. She was a very bright and caring person and I am sure you have many special memories of how important she was in your lives as well.

I was very sorry to hear about your mother. My parents (Frank & Betty Bingham) were very good friends with your parents and my brother Peter went to school with Alison. I saw Doris about 2 years ago when Dickie Kay invited her and my family to lunch. My deepest sympathy to you.
