Donna Wilson Obituary

Donna Wood Wilson Mt. Pleasant - Donna Wood Wilson, 66, of Mount Pleasant, SC, wife of Marion Edward "Ed" Wilson, Jr., and mother of Leland Shiver Wilson, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 29, 2021. Her funeral service will be held Sunday, November 7, 2021 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. in the Stuhr Mount Pleasant Chapel. Donna was born November 21, 1954 in Kinston, NC, daughter of the late Lewis Aaron Wood and Bobby Nell Page Wood. She is a graduate of Clemson University and worked for many years as a registered nurse in Charleston. Above all, she was a loving wife to Ed and a loving mother to Leland, who has special needs and uses a wheelchair. During Leland's youth, Donna was a staunch and relentless advocate for accessibility and inclusion within the public school system. She is credited with many victories in the battle to have special needs students housed in their local school and mainstreamed when possible. She ran support groups for parents of children with special needs and described herself as "pleasantly persistent" when it came to advocacy. During Ed's years in US Navy Medical Corps, Donna worked for the Navy Relief organization and she specialized in helping young enlisted Navy families write a budget and manage their finances. Donna was also active in the MUSC women's club for many years, directing an annual holiday Poinsettia sale fundraiser that supported student scholarships at MUSC. She hosted many fundraising dinners and events during the 15 years when Ed was a department chair at MUSC. Donna traveled extensively with Ed during their 46 years of marriage. Together they explored more than 15 countries including locations in Vietnam, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sweden, Italy, France, Mexico, and Costa Rico. Her favorite location was Guatemala where annual trips to Antigua and San Marcos on Lake Atitlan highlighted her year. Donna was also fond of family traditions at holiday time, yearly extended family Christmas Eve gift exchange games and Christmas morning brunch and Thanksgiving week in Orlando with just Leland and Ed. A more recent tradition has been an extended family rental house week on Kiawah Island in July. She loved this and all of the family events. Donna was very close to all 4 of her sisters and their group texts were frequent and visits also as often as possible. Donna is survived by her husband of 46 years, Ed, and her son, Leland, 42; sisters, Marsha McIlwain (Pinckney) of Charleston, WV, Gloria Vanadore (Ben) of Abbeville, SC, Wanda Reid of Charleston, WV and Sylvia Keenan (Tony) of Simpsonville, SC. Her mom, Bobby Wood, resides in Greenville. Flowers are accepted and memorials may be made to East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) where the motto is "Do Good!", 1145 Six Mile Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29466. I have had the privilege of working for the Wilson family for over 15 years. Donna was an awesome employer but most of all a great friend. She was always willing to listen offering wisdom and advice. Donna was always supportive, we would compare our experiences as nurses sometimes we would laugh and sometimes cry. If she had not seen me in awhile she look at me and say I feel like my long lost daughter is has made it home. I have very fond memories of sitting around her kitchen table laughing, joking and catching up on each lives. Donna's laughter was contagious, I always wanted to tell her my story just to hear laugh. Her number one love was her family. You could feel her joy and excitement when surrounded by them. Donna always me feel welcome and special.

Ed and Leland my heart is broken for your loss. May you find comfort in knowing how many lives she touched including mine.
The world lost an amazing person .

Dear Ed - I am extremely saddened by the passing of Donna. When I close my eyes and think about her, I see her wonderful, generous, kind and loving smile. Certainly one of a mother and a nurse, as well as a friend and a selfless "giver". I will always cherish the occasions that we have had to be together at meetings and to enjoy her company. I send you and Leland my most sincere and heartfelt condolences and I will pray for her soul. She is in Heaven.

My sister, Donna, will always be remembered as a person who was loving and generous with her time. I once suddenly had to be in the hospital for five days. She kept my two sons who were small at the time for those days and refused to have them return home until I had an additional five days to get my strength back. Family was so important to her.

We are so sorry to hear of Donna's passing - it was far to soon with all the wonderful things she still had to contribute to her family , friends and our communities! We were looking forward to resuming our delightful visits with her again next year when our professional meetings are planned to become in person again - she was always such a friendly , helpful and sincere leading member of our Costenbader society - always making young and old members feel welcome and included and always a down to earth voice of inclusion and reason. Our family extends their deepest sympathy to Ed and Leland and all her family - she will always remain in our hearts and minds.
