Donald Dowdy Obituary

Donald Dean Dowdy JOHNS ISLAND - Donald Dean Dowdy, 90, of Johns Island, South Carolina, husband of surviving spouse, Mary Elizabeth Dowdy, entered into eternal rest Thursday, June 19, 2025. His memorial service will be held Saturday, August 02, 2025, in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, at 2:00 pm. Donald was born July 24, 1934, in Wilson, Oklahoma, son of Thomas Golder Dowdy and Alvia Pearlene Kincheloe Dowdy. Donald left Oklahoma to serve in the Navy during the Korean War and met his bride, Mary Elizabeth Saunders "Kitty". They married in October 1957 and moved to Oklahoma where they lived 7 years and Donald worked on the oil fields as a roustabout. They moved back to Charleston, SC, in 1965 and Donald started a welder apprenticeship at Charleston Naval Shipyard. They built their home in West Ashley themselves while Donald worked swing shift. Donald advanced at the ship yard to the Production Engineering and Planning office (Code 385) where he worked until he retired in 1991. He followed up that long history of Civil service to start his own business Triple D Services. He used his carpentry skills to build beautiful built-in cabinets and shelves for his customers in the greater Charleston area. In the last years of his life, Donald enjoyed spending his time with his wife, Kitty, and family actively participating in his daughter and his grandkids lives, attending high school and college graduations, visiting often, and always celebrating their career and personal successes with them. Although a great distance separated him from his siblings, he maintained routine contact with his brother and sister. Donald lived a good life and as a good friend said of Donald, he was truly a faithful servant. He is also survived by daughter, Cindy Woodrum and her spouse, Wayne Woodrum, of Jacksonville, FL; and three (3) Grandchildren, Garrett Rodemann, Samantha Woodrum, Brandon Woodrum of Sanford, FL; also he is survived by his brother, Thomas Wayne Dowdy; and sister, Pearlene Goldie Dowdy who still reside in Wilson, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. As a suggestion, Donald was a proud Korean War Veteran and he was greatly appreciative of the Veteran Korean War Honors flights he got to participate in 2015.
