Your Don has to be my Sunday school friend from many years ago at Grace Church. We went through high school, or at least junior high - a small class of about seven or eight. Derek Wade, Don, and Gene were the boys. I´m sure he maintained his sense of humor: I remember a teacher talking about prayer. Trying to keep it simple, she said that God hears and answers all our prayers. That led Don to sit up and pay attention: "do you mean if I ask God for a new surfboard, I´ll get one?"
I´m imagining that he did get a new one - likely more than one as his obituary mentions surfing. So maybe that boyish response is one we should celebrate and emulate.
My sincere condolences on your loss.
