David Rumsey

November 12, 2015

My name is David K. Rumsey. As chance would have it, Dexter C. Rumsey III and I entered the Marine Corps Officer's School in Quantico, VA, on the very same day. I remember telling my mother of the coincidence, and she, the daughter of an Army officer, and the wife of an Army officer, informed me that she had known a Dexter C. Rumsey, a Naval officer, in her younger days. To my knowledge, there is no relationship between my father, Ivan C. Rumsey, and Dexter's father. Being assigned alphabetically, Dexter and I ended up in the same squad of the same platoon at the Basic School. Having the same last name, and first initial, caused some confusion, as no one went by first name. It was always last name, then first initial. Dexter became DC and I became DK. We also became fast friends during our six months in Officer's Basic School. We both served in Vietnam, and, also by chance, we both became lawyers, with Dexter graduating from UVA Law, and me graduating from U of MD Law. Over the years we would occasionally telephone each other, or e-mail each other. I once visited Dexter and his wife at their home in Virginia. I always took great pride in knowing that there was another Rumsey who had followed a similar path. We would argue with each other, in fun, over who was the real Rumsey, and who was the other Rumsey. We had actually had a contest, in Basic School, to determine that issue, but we still argued over who had won the contest. I had a long telephone conversation with Dexter a few months ago. I telephoned to invite him to a Marine Corps Birthday party at my place, to take place this weekend. It was then that I learned of how seriously ill Dexter was. He was sharp as a tack, when we talked, and, once again, we had a discussion about which of us was the Real Rumsey, and which was the Other Rumsey. I always took great comfort in knowing that Dexter was down there in Tidewater Virginia, while I was up here in Southern Maryland, both of us doing our thing. Dexter was such a kind spirit, and an enjoyable person to talk to. I already miss him, greatly. My heart goes out to his family for their loss.
