DeLouris Hollinger Obituary

DeLouris Miller Hollinger MT. PLEASANT - DeLouris, born June 15, 1929, left us with a song in her heart to go dancing again with her husband Richard under the old oak tree on August 7, 2013. She was the daughter of Inez Lucille Dyches and Walden Claude Miller. DeLouris was a child of God, always grateful for his unconditional, redeeming love. She led a life of family devotion and was an advocate for those in need. DeLouris graduated from Columbia College with a voice major. There she met the love of her life, The Reverend Dr. Richard Miller Hollinger, a graduate of The Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. They married in June of 1951 and enjoyed 61 years of marriage. She took pride in her role as a pastor's wife, leading by example in many areas: prison ministry, older adult ministries, ministry to the marginalized, children's choir, handbells, and Sunday School. She established the first respite care program for Alzheimer's patients in Charleston, SC. Richard and DeLouris served congregations in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. She served on the SC Synod Council of the ELCA as well as the Florida Synod. DeLouris was a frequent soloist, and sang with the St. Petersburg Opera and Clearwater Chorus in Florida. Richard and DeLouris were charter members of The Adventurers Club and enjoyed good times and laughter with their dear friends in Clearwater, FL. They retired to the Isle of Palms, SC, and later moved to Franke at Seaside. DeLouris served on the planning committee at Franke and enjoyed painting classes and time with friends. She also enjoyed sewing, painting, acting, and dancing. She wrote and performed many dramas, musicals, monologues, and poems, and co-stared in the female version of "The Odd Couple." Her son, Dr. Wayne Miller Hollinger, Valerie Bunch Hollinger, and their children, Nathan Tillman Hollinger, Sara Frances Hollinger Rasmussen, Luke Edward Rasmussen, great-grandsons Hollis Ames Rasmussen; her daughter, Melinda Hollinger Matthews, T. Van Matthews, and their children, Erin Matthews Barton, Andrew Francis Barton, Emily Matthews Bugay and J. Lee Bugay will cherish memories and stories of this renaissance woman throughout their lifetimes. Memorials may be given to ELCA Global Missions at PO Box 71764, Chicago, IL 60694, or www.ELCA.org with recognitions sent to Wayne Hollinger, 400 N. Main Street #405, Greenville, SC 29601. A memorial service will be held at St. Michael Lutheran Church, Greenville, SC, on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 1 p.m., with a visitation beginning at noon. DeLouris was indeed a blessing to all who knew her - she was loving, she could tell you like it is (and get over it!), and a source of smiles, laughter and the Joy of Life (can't remember the French translation!).
I hold two memories of her very close: When my dearest ever friend Sondley died, I would not/could not go to the funeral home.
DeLouris, "You have to go!" so off I went and totally lost it.
Second, the song Last Dance fits here - At Erin's wedding reception, she and I cut the Light Fantastic (and was HEAVILY POINTY FINGERS - "What have you done, Hal? She's not suppose to do that!" My pollite reply: "Well, tell her that!" and off we went. Such a wonderful blessing to have her in my life and in my memories. LuvU D.

DeLouris was a delight to care for! She always reached out to people in need--even when she was in need during her stay in assisted living/skilled nursing at Cascades-Verdae. She would involve lonely people in activities and always changed where she sat at each meal in order to minister to different people around her. She will be greatly missed! --Natalie and all the staff at Cascades-Verdae

We were saddened to hear of De Louris's death. We met De Louris and Richard when we retired to Charleston and St Matthews from Wisconsin. They both made us feel welcome. De Louris iintroduced us to the SC Bishop as her Yankee friends which we laughed at for many years afterward. We will never forget their friendship.

Delouris and Richard arrived at St. Matthews/Charleston about the same time I did. I'll always remember their zest for life and their unconditional love; truly special friends! Richard was a USC Grad class of '49 as were both of my parents. 60ish years later, they lived in the same building as my Mom at Franke; moved in the same day!!

Dear Hollinger family,

Please accept my deepest sympathies for the loss of DeLouris. I had the pleasure of working with Richard and DeLouris at Lutheran Coastal Retreat Center from 1995 thru 2000 while teaching elderhostel courses. One has uniquely different people enter their lives and DeLouris was a wonderfully gifted woman. I cherish our special friendship.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers during this time of celebration of a life well lived.

Delouris was a phenomenal lady. I feel privileged to have known her - and danced with her! She had the happiest feet I know. Much love to all of her family.
