Lil Pond and Mae Green were a great example of funloving ladies, with many stories of their adventures! Velma and Tony Unwin stood up for my Parents, Galneau & Mary Pond when they were married. Mary and Velma were best girlfriends. David was always the loving, funny Military Man through and through. Our families were so close that my parents lived upstairs at the Unwin house when they were between homes. The Unwin family is the family who will do anything to help others, especially their relatives. I was lucky to have them in my formative years.

Mrs. Unwin, Years ago I was a first grade student at Wythe Elementary School fortunate enough to have you as my first teacher. Your kindness and sensitivity made school a positive place for a shy, scared little girl. I'm sorry to read of your loss.

DEAR BETTY AND ALL MY COUSINS,
DAVID CALLED ME A LITTLE WHILE AFTER MY MOTHER'S PASSING LAST SUMMER, AND WE REMINISCED ABOUT OUR YOUNGER YEARS, BOTH OF US FEELING BLESSED WITH HAVING SUCH GREAT LIFE EXAMPLES IN OUR PARENTS -- AND WE LAUGHED AT THE FUN THE TWO FAMILIES ALWAYS HAD. VELMA AND TONY STOOD WITH MY MOM & DAD FOR THEIR WEDDING IN 1936. THEY WERE BEST FRIENDS AND THAT CLOSENESS TRANSCENDED TO ALL OF US, CHILDREN LIKE BROTHERS AND SISTERS.
I AM SO FORTUNATE I HAD THAT GREAT CONVERSATION WITH DAVID AT THAT TIME. HE, AND ALL THE UNWINS ARE A GREAT PART OF THE FOND MEMORIES OF OUR EARLIER YEARS.
DAVID WAS A SPECIAL MAN, LOVED BY ALL OF US WHO WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO COME ACROSS HIS PATH.
LOVE,
NANCY

Betty, What a shock! I just returned from Columbia. My heart hurts for you and your family and you will always be in my prayers. David was always such a dear and treasured friend as are you. God Bless! The comforting thought for me has been the knowledge that "for his faithful, life is changed; not taken away, and when the abode on this earth is disolved, an eternal dwelling is prepared for us in heaven". Betty and family, our deepest regrets. Dave will be sorely missed.
December 27, 2010
Dear Betty - Kathleen and I will always remember how thoughtful it was of you and David to visit Mary on your trips to Malone. Your visits meant a lot to her.
Although we didn't get to see you folks lately the times we did get together were precious opportunities to catch up on our respective families and the Unwin "clan".
David inherited the "patriarch" role of the family as Judy captured the role of "matriarch".
David's legacy is his extraordinary body of work and associations from his active duty days through his post retirement years, and of course the terrific children you both raised.
He had a great life and will always be remembered for his care and committment to his family and his hometown "cousins".

David was my "elder" cousin by about 9 months (which seemed like a long time growing up).Our maternal grandmothers were sisters.
Although we were raised on different sides of the border, we spent a lot of time playing together. I particularly remember that he introduced me to Ketchup sandwiches. Although our paths went in different directions after David enlisted, I was proud of his dedicated efforts on behalf of our country. David was a proud, fun-loving young man and he continued to serve others throughout his life. He will be sorely missed by Betty, his children, grandchildren and extended family.

Betty our friendship runs so deep. We will so miss your beloved Dave. So many years we have had our friendship (over 45 years if my memory serves me correctly.) Dave is now with God and he will always be a part of our lives.
