I really miss Mr. Stewart he was so good to me !!

It is now 2024. I am Loy´s brother, Gregg. I was a surrogate caregiver for Loy and
miss him terribly. He
was a best friend, great guy, loved people, particularly family. Can´t say enough about his passion for helping people in any way he could. Miss you, Bro!!!

I remember Loy so fondly from high school. Our desk were adjacent. We both received Milliken Scholarships to attend college. I graduated from Erskine and would see Loy quite often and we would share rides with another classmate Katherine Cheatham. These were wonderful times and he was a good and kind friend. My prayers to his family and blessings for the time shared

Dear Loy, Jason, and Jonathan: I was so sorry to read of your dad's passing in the Post Courier today! I remember him, your mom, and all three of you fondly. Loy, you will remember we were in third grade together and East Cooper School. I also saw all three of you (and your wonderful mom and dad) frequently on the baseball field, as we all grew up [and as I watched my brothers play, too]. Sending you prayers, love, and peace. You have a fantastic legacy to carry forward!

In life I loved you dearly, In death I love still, You left a place within our hearts no one else could ever fill.

I was saddened to see the notice of Mr. Stewart's passing. I admired him so much for his courage, for his will to live-- and to live well-- and for his determination. I am very sorry for your loss, but we all rejoice to know that he has heard those words: "Well done, good and faithful servant." And knowing that, everyone can feel love and peace, smiling at the good family memories you will always cherish.

We were sorry to hear about Loy's death. We have never known anyone who was so willing to help other people with his devastating disease. Our prayers are for Loy and all his family.ThpfN

Loy was one of my inspirations that helped me accept and live a full life with ALS. I went to my first ALS support group meeting as a newly diagnosed 69 year old with ALS. I was very apprehensive about going, I did not know what I would see, who I would meet and how I would be received since my systems allowed me to still walk. That is where I met Loy and learned that he had been diagnosed 15 years earlier by the same doctor. After the meeting Loy took me to the ship's store to get my pickle, a Detyens Shipyard shirt. Each month I would stay and talk to him, he showed me his golf club collection, the clip the President and sometimes another pickle. It is because of Loy that I realized that ALS is only an immediate death sentence if I allow it to be. Rest in peace Loy, and I am sure if there is a golf course in heaven you are on it right now.

Mr. Loy Stewart was my boss, friend, a mentor to many others like me, and a wonderful human being. He is the reason I came over to Detyens and stayed on until retirement. His demise is a loss to all whose life he touched and helped to improve. RIP "THE" Mr. Stewart!

Heaven has gained an angel and earth has lost a man who sincerely cared about his family and communities...It is always a privilege to share a conversation around dinner with classmates....and Loy spoke with passion and sincerity about his latest escapades and missions in life. My sincere condolences to his family and friends...we will all truly miss him but have fond memories of the way he touched our lives...God Be With You

My heart aches for the family and yet is filled with joy for the gift of Loy's life and love. He will continue to inspire me to be better and do more.

I had the privilege of serving as Loy's pastor for a short while more than thirty years ago. From 19987 to 1990 I served alongside the people of Sullivan's Island Baptist Church, which meant I had an opportunity to walk with Judy and Loy.

Loy and I had a bit in common: he was the son of a minister and I was trying my best to be one; we both loved golf, though he was far better at it than I was; we both loved God and strove to serve the Lord.

Loy lifted me up when I was down, encouraged me when I was broken-hearted, strengthened me when I was weary, and cared for me in ways great and small. I ate a number of meals with him at the shipyard as we talked about the church and family. He was always positive, always helpful, always gracious.

Loy was often ahead of his time, never leading with arrogance but by example. He was full of hope and grace, not himself. The medical care he extended to his employees and the community is a wonderful example of what one can do if one has an expansive vision and a loving heart.

I am thankful I had the chance to walk with Loy for a while. I am more thankful he walks with God forever.

Loy and Judy, both, were such a dear, dear part of my life. I will be forever grateful for their influence and their deep, deep love for Christ. See you on the other side some day, brother.

I can't even begin to say how much knowing Mr. Stewart meant to me. I ran into him at the Georgetown Boat Show last October and I saw this really modern looking wooden boat. Somehow I knew instantly who's boat this was and then comes rolling up the sidewalk, Mr. Stewart. My husband was playing in the band right near his boat and he stayed for a bit to listen. I knew Judy and Mr. Stewart for so many years as I did Judy's nails for better than 20 years. I was in awe of how much they loved each other and took the lessons learn to my own marriage of 33 years until I too lost my husband very suddenly. They helped me to enjoy each and every day you had together and If I had not known them I would have taken this for granted. What a wonderful man he was....Touching so many lives....I was one of those 10 people he wanted to help but I told him that his life lessons and friendship were invaluable to me and I was good. Thank you for all you did. Rest in Peace Mr. Stewart....surely you have met God and you are basking in his Glory.

Mr Stewart was a great man and I was privileged to know him . May God bless his family in these difficult times.

It was an honor to know mr. Stewart the sweetest man I have ever known a heart of gold he will surely be missed and I know I want some what's the Stewart I told you this time and time again you are a different kind of man I am glad I had the pleasure of knowing you and working for you God truly got one of his angels back keep looking out for all of us cuz you are going to be missed here on Earth and Angel among the living love you mr. Of all the jobs that I have had in my fifty years of working,Mr Stewart was the very best man I ever worked for. I have the utmost respect for him and it was a pleasure to know him and I like to think he made me a better person.

Loyd was truly a man among men! We will miss him and our matching ALS bird tattoo.

Loy's departure from this world leaves me with sense of gratefulness for having had the privilege of knowing him while God blessed us with his presence. I don't think I've ever met a more committed person in my life - committed to his business, his family, definitely his friends, and to his vision for making the world a better place for so many.
To "Little Loy" (Maupin's moniker) and the rest of the family my sincere condolences. I know Loy wouldn't want me to say I'm sad (if I did he'd tell me a joke to keep me from feeling that way) but I am sad, but so grateful for having known Loy.

What a gracious individual who adored his wife and boys.
I am thinking of the old East Cooper days and the pleasure it was to be in his presence and always seeing him antique shopping.

Sympathy and Prayers to the family! Loy was a classmate from Abbeville High School Class of 65. Loy attended some of our class luncheons, and I'm still wearing two of the shipyards shirts that he gave to us. God Bless the family!

Loy was the first man I saw that could meet you, then two months later, call you by name.
He was the first company president that told all his workers that he had an open door policy, come on in.
Back in the days before ALS gripped him, he was the one man that could sneak up on us rookies when we were goofing off instead of working and catch us, no matter how many people we had looking out for him. We nicknamed him The ghost, because we were convinced he could walk through walls in order to do it!
He guided that company from a small yard, into a big one, who employed many people, for many years.
He was a special person for all he did, and it was a pleasure to have worked for him and to have known him. Rest well Loy, we will miss you, but we know we will see you again one day.... John and Lan Cantrell.

Sherri and I came to know Loy in 1978 when he served as chairman of the pastor selection committee for Sullivans Island Baptist Church. We came to love him and Judy and can never forget the many things they did for us as a family and as pastor. We pray for the family during this difficult time in our history. Loy was the best of the best! Enjoyed softball and golf with him, but most of all seeing him with Judy and those three boys in church regularly. Gene and Sherri Daggerhart
