David Spires Obituary

David Douglas Spires CHARLESTON - David Douglas Spires (76) of Charleston, SC, died on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, surrounded by his children. David is survived by his daughter, Laura Spires Weiss, and grandchildren, Forrest and Sydney Weiss, of Austin, TX; and his son, Ryan Spires, of Charleston, SC. David is preceded in death by his siblings - older sister, Jean Dossett Paakkonen, and younger sister, Betty Lou Lain, of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by many other Spires family in the Conway area, across the state and throughout the country. The family will be holding a Celebration of David's life in the coming weeks with details to be announced. David fought valiantly against COVID-19 and transitioned peacefully after a 5-day stay in Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, SC. The family extends their appreciation to the physicians, nurses and staff who cared for David and made it possible for the family to be by his side. Many friends and family gave of their hearts, homes and love to David over the years, and that never went unnoticed. (Thank you!) David was proud of his Spires heritage and passionate about family. He was born in Columbia, SC, and attended Chicora High School, Class of '64. In his early years, he was a committed athlete and loved football - playing for Clemson in college before a knee injury redirected his career path. David excelled at science and math and entered industrial facilities management, where he finished his working years with Boeing, until an injury forced his retirement. David also enjoyed being a South Carolina native and was a good friend to many. You might have seen him carousing with friends in Downtown Charleston, maybe at Tommy Condon's listening to music, holding a pool cue or just enjoying the sunshine. He loved the outdoors and boating on Charleston waterways, from the Ashley River to the Isle of Palms. David also loved the history of Charleston and embraced the culture and people, proudly showing off the city and surrounding countryside as a natural tour guide for many visiting family and friends. David could also build anything and was a self-taught engineer and architect. If you had an idea and it could be done - he would figure it out! And while David was undeniably a "jack of all trades", he was a master wordsmith and an outstanding writer, giving him a special gift for storytelling and memory-making. And very few knew he was amazing with a brush and paint, and not just on walls! His creativity was always flowing and his smile was always warm and genuine. Strong in heart, mind and deed, David's sweet blue eyes were the window to his gentle soul. He will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, his children ask that you consider making a donation on GoFundMe (at https://www.gofundme.com/f/celebration-of-life-for-david-spires) to assist with his unplanned heavenly arrangements. So very sorry to learn of Daivd's passing. He was the epitome of "strong and silent." He was a classmate of whom over the years I wish I had gotten to know better. I was also disheartened to learn of his sister's earlier death. Betty Lou was a beautiful young lady whom I had the pleasure of knowing. I was fortunate to date her a few times and we remained friends over the years. The two of them were truly people of the highest character.
